The Crown Princess is a cruise ship of the shipping company Princess Cruises put into service in 2006 .

history

Construction and commissioning

The Crown Princess was built under construction number 6100 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone ( Italy ). Some elements of the ship were built under construction number 1000 at Fincantieri in Genoa. She is the second ship that the shipping company has put into service under this name. The Crown Princess is the type ship of the Crown class, which is a further development of the Grand class. By using light metal, it was possible to build an additional deck, which increased the passenger capacity by 20%. The Crown Princess is measured at over 113,000 GT . The ship was delivered in May 2006 and sailed under the Bermuda flag with home port Hamilton . The maiden voyage began on June 14, 2006 and led from New York through the Caribbean to Port Canaveral ( Florida ).

Incidents

Incident 2006

On the afternoon of July 18, 2006 , after leaving Port Canaveral , the Crown Princess suddenly got into a steep incline. In addition to falling furniture and shattering panes of glass, water also streamed from the swimming pool into the staircases and elevator shafts. According to passengers, panic broke out on board. The incident is due to human error. A junior officer noticed a supposed malfunction of the autopilot , deactivated it and steered even more in the direction already taken by the autopilot, which ultimately led to a lean angle of approx. 15 °. After an investigation by the responsible investigating authorities, the ship was declared seaworthy again. The Crown Princess was on a nine-day Caribbean cruise and on her way back to New York . This accident is considered to be one of the most serious incidents in the history of modern cruises.

Incident 2012

In 2012, the norovirus broke out on the ship on two consecutive cruises. The second trip was canceled and 158 people fell ill on the first trip.

commitment

The ship is used worldwide for cruises.
