The Diamond Princess is a Postpanamax cruise ship operated by the Princess Cruises shipping company . It was the first of two at the shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in Nagasaki ( Japan asked built) vessels Gem class on 26 February 2004 in service. Her sister ship is the Sapphire Princess , which entered service on May 27, 2004 .

history

Construction and commissioning

In February 2000 MHI received the contract to build two cruise ships for Princess Cruises. The completion date for the first ship was agreed in July 2003 and for the second in May 2004. The construction of the Diamond Princess , today's Sapphire Princess, began in June 2001 .

On October 1, 2002, there was a fire on deck 5 of the ship on the Diamond Princess, as a result of which around 40% of the hull burned out. A punctual completion of the Diamond Princess could no longer be guaranteed due to the damage caused. In order to approximately meet the delivery date, the client and the shipyard agreed to swap the names of the ships and to continue building the hull of the second ship, which is also under construction (planned as the Sapphire Princess ), as the Diamond Princess . As a result, the delivery of the Diamond Princess was only delayed by seven months.

Areas of application

From Vancouver , the Diamond Princess operates cruises in the waters around Alaska during the summer season . In the winter season it is used in Asia , Australia and New Zealand .

Machine system and drive

The diesel-electric drive consists of four diesel generators and a gas turbine generator, which drive two electric motors. The diesel generators were built by Wärtsilä and run on heavy fuel oil (HFO). General Electric's LM2500 gas turbine generator uses marine diesel oil (MGO). For reasons of cost, the system is only used in areas where strict emission guidelines apply or when the ship is supposed to reach top speed. To maneuver in the port, there is a cross-thruster control system with three 2200-kilowatt bow thrusters and three 1728-kilowatt stern thrusters.

In 2017 the ship received an Air Lubrication System from Silverstream Technologies to reduce fuel consumption.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The Diamond Princess offers space for 2670 passengers on 13 decks. Over half of the 1337 cabins have a balcony. The cabins and suites are between 14 m² (inside cabin) and 123 m² (grand suite with balcony). There are several main dining rooms and a 24-hour dining buffet, four pools, and a children's pool. Other on-board facilities include the Broadway and Las Vegas style theater, a casino, the atrium with shops and art gallery, and the Skywalkers disco / lounge.

Special occurrences

Norovirus, 2014

At the beginning of 2014, 60 passengers on an Australia cruise fell ill due to an infection with a norovirus . As a result, the entire ship had to be disinfected, which led to delays in the following cruise.

Coronavirus, 2020

On February 5, 2020, the ship was quarantined in the port of Yokohama , Japan . The reason for this were passengers infected with the coronavirus .
