Ekaterina Kostina

Ekaterina Kostina is a Russian-German mathematician and university professor . She is a professor at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and in 2007 was the first female mathematics professor at the Philipps-Universität Marburg .

life and work

Kostina attended grammar school N 64 in Minsk from 1971 to 1981 . She then studied at the Belarusian State University in Minsk, where she received a Master of Science degree in 1986 and a PhD in mathematics in 1990 with a dissertation: Algorithms for solving nonsmooth minmax problems. From 1986 to 1992 she was Junior Research Scientist and from 1993 to 1997 Research Scientist at the Institute of Mathematics of the BSSR Ac.Sci., Minsk. She then worked as a research scientist until 2002 and as a research assistant at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing IWR at Heidelberg University . After a visiting professorship at the University of Siegen , she became Professor of Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2007 and headed the Chair of Numerical Optimization at the University of Marburg. In 2010 she became a member of Synmicro, the Center for Synthetic Microbiology at the Philipps University of Marburg, the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and the Max Planck Society . In 2015 she accepted a professorship for numerical mathematics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. She is a founding member of the National Committee for Mathematical Modeling, Simulation and Optimization (KoMSO).

Awards

  • 1985/1986: Vladimir Ilyich Lenin scholarship for outstanding academic success
  • 2004: Best lecture in the Optimization section at the DMV annual conference
  • 2013: Appointment as a member of the advisory board of the BMBF program "Mathematics"
