Royal Viking Sky

The Royal Viking Sky was built near Wärtsilä in Helsinki . The keel of the ship was laid on December 1, 1971, the launch on May 25, 1972. On June 1, 1973 the ship was completed and handed over to the Royal Viking Line on June 5, 1973 , which it is for cruises on various routes around the world began.

In its original form, the Royal Viking Sky measured 21,891 GT and was 177.70 m long. The equipment was luxurious for its time and designed for long-distance trips to exotic destinations with a wealthy audience. The number of passengers was correspondingly low at 536, a disproportionately high proportion of whom were accommodated in suites. The crew was 324 men at that time - roughly the same as it is today.

A very popular event at the time was the first simultaneous crossing of the Panama Canal by two sister ships with Royal Viking Sky and Royal Viking Star on May 1, 1976 (albeit in opposite directions).

renewal

From September 9 to November 27, 1982, the ship at AG Weser in Bremerhaven was lengthened by 28 meters to 206 meters. In addition, the capacity was increased to 812 passengers. To the chagrin of their operators, the renovation and especially the significant increase in the number of passengers were less well received by the guests, which was also reflected in the booking figures.

In 1987 the ship was re-registered at Kloster Cruise, based in Nassau , Bahamas . On September 14, 1991, it was given a new name and was now called Sunward .

Birka Queen

In May 1992 Birka Line, Mariehamn , Åland , Finland , bought the ship and had it overhauled at Hortens shipyard in Norway. It was renamed to the name Birka Queen .

Between June 10 and October 23, 1992, it operated on the Stockholm - Riga and Stockholm - St. Petersburg routes .

On October 27 of that year, the Kloster Cruise Line, based in Bergen, Norway, chartered the ship and renamed it Sunward again . At the same time it was registered on Birka Cruise Ltd, Nassau, Bahamas.

Golden Princess

Princess Cruises chartered the ship in June 1993 . Again it was renamed and was now called Golden Princess . On June 13, 1993, the first cruise started from San Francisco towards Alaska .

On July 7, 1996, a fire broke out in the engine room, which resulted in a total failure of all computer systems on board. In Victoria , Canada , the passengers were disembarked. A little later the ship was towed to San Francisco for repairs. It arrived there on July 8, 1996.

SuperStar Capricorn

Star Cruises Private from Singapore bought the ship in early 1997 . It was now called SuperStar Capricorn .

In March 1998 the ship was used for casino cruises from New York . Two months later this operation was canceled because the journeys only resulted in losses.

Hyundai Keumgang

Hyundai Merchant Marine , Panama chartered the ship for five years on September 20, 1998 . It was renamed Hyundai Keumgang and was used for pilgrimages to North Korea from November 18, 1998 . In October 2001, Hyundai Merchant Marine Co Ltd had to file for bankruptcy; the ship was returned to Star Cruises Private.

A little later it was transferred to Hamburg for extensive modernization measures. All four marine diesel engines there were replaced by new MAN B&W engines. Each has an output of 3500 kW at 750 rpm. It also received new propellers. The ship was floated on January 6, 2006 - afterwards test drives were carried out on the Elbe and the North Sea .

On February 20, 2006, the ship arrived in Dover , Great Britain . Smaller final work was carried out so that on February 23 the first cruise from Dover to Madeira and the Canary Islands could begin.

On the journey from Cádiz to Arrecife , a fire broke out in the engine room off the coast of Morocco at around 4 a.m. on the morning of January 25, 2015 .
