history

Construction and commissioning

Today's Black Watch was laid down on July 1, 1970 as hull number 395 at the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki . After the launch on May 12, 1971 and completion, the ship was put into service on June 26, 1972 for the shipping company Royal Viking Line under the name Royal Viking Star under the Norwegian flag. At that time she was measured with 21,847 GRT and was used for cruises.

Used by Royal Viking Line and Royal Cruise Line

Between the end of August and mid-November 1981, the Royal Viking Star was extended from the original 177.77 m to 205.46 m at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven by inserting a new hull section, which had been built by Schichau Seebeck , and then started up again .

In 1988 the ship was sold to the shipping company Kloster Cruise ( Nassau , Bahamas ), which renamed the ship Westward in April 1991 . After switching to the Royal Cruise Line , the ship was used in 1994 under the name Star Odyssey for cruises in the Mediterranean .

Use at Fred. Olsen Cruise Line

In October 1996, Fred took over. Olsen Cruise Line took the ship into service from November 1996 under its current name Black Watch . After more than 30 years under the Norwegian flag, she moved to the shipping register of the Bahamas . Between mid-May and mid-June 2005, the Black Watch was subjected to extensive renovation work at Blohm + Voss , with the machine system also being renewed.

The Black Watch at Blohm + Voss

Starting from the base ports in Dover , Southampton , Sydney , Singapore and Callao , it is used for cruises worldwide.

Accident during repairs in Hamburg

During a stay at the shipyard in November 2016, there was an accident that was fatal for a Blohm + Voss worker . A falling steel beam killed the worker and seriously injured another shipyard worker. The ship had been in Dock 11 in the von Blohm + Voss for repairs for about a week.

Retirement

In 2020, Fred. Olsen, the sister ships Rotterdam and Amsterdam of the Holland America Line . The Black Watch and her sister ship Boudicca then left the Fred's fleet in August 2020. Olsen Cruise Lines.

Machine system and drive

Originally, the ship was equipped with four Wärtsilä - Sulzer nine-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of the type 9ZA40 / 48, which developed an output of 13,240 kW and operated via a gearbox on two variable-pitch propellers. During the renovation work at Blohm + Voss , the engines were replaced by more powerful seven-cylinder four-stroke engines from the MAN B&W 32/40 series. As a result, the speed of travel increased, and delays in the timetable could be better caught up.

On July 1, 2016, a fire broke out on board. It damaged three power generators. The ship ran into Funchal on Madeira Island one day later as planned . In view of the likely duration of the repair work on the wiring to the ship's diesel engines, the shipping company decided to fly the 696 passengers home over the course of a few days.
