The Royal Viking Line was a United States- based shipping company that operated several cruise lines from 1972 until it was dissolved in 1998 .

history

The Royal Viking Star , the shipping company's first ship

The Royal Viking Line was founded in 1972 by Warren Titus in San Francisco . In the Finnish shipyard Wärtsilä three newbuildings were commissioned, each of which should belong to a different investor in the shipping company. The first to be delivered in 1972 was the Royal Viking Star , which was transferred to Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab . In 1973 the Royal Viking Sky and the Royal Viking Sea followed , which also belonged to other companies and were only managed by the Royal Viking Line. The three sister ships were henceforth operated under the Norwegian flag and used for worldwide cruises.

After their operation had proven to be profitable, the three ships were lengthened successively in the years 1981 to 1983 at AG Weser in Bremerhaven by more than twenty meters, which increased their capacity by 200 passengers. In 1984 the investors decided to sell the shipping company to Norwegian Cruise Line . Another new building was commissioned under the new owner, the Royal Viking Sun, which was delivered in 1988 . It was followed in 1992 by the much smaller Royal Viking Queen , which had a yacht-like appearance and was identical to two other ships of the Seabourn Cruise Line , which was also led by Warren Titus.

In 1991, the shipping company's first three ships were resold within the Norwegian Cruise Line, which shrank the Royal Viking Line's fleet. After financial difficulties, the parent company separated in 1994 from the ailing company, which was now continued by the Cunard Line . After four years, the Royal Viking Line merged with the Seabourn Cruise Line in 1998 and was subsequently dissolved.
