The Murtfeldt Kunststoffe GmbH & Co. KG , based in Dortmund , North Rhine-Westphalia is a company that, together with its subsidiaries Murdotec (Dortmund), Mata plastics ( Noordwijkerhout , Netherlands ) and Murtfeldt Plasty ( Měšice , Czech Republic ) as well as various sales and trading partners internationally in the field of plastics production and processing .

Murtfeldt Kunststoffe produces semi-finished and finished parts from ultra-high molecular weight low-pressure polyethylene (UHMW-PE / PE-UHMW), high molecular weight polyethylene (PE-HMW) and other engineering plastics such as polyamide (PA), polyoxymethylene (POM), polyethylene terephthalate (PETP) or polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and is one of the leading providers in the field of manufacturing and machining of engineering plastics and high-performance plastics . The products are mainly used in machine and plant construction as well as in drive and conveyor technology, but also in other areas.

An ultra-high molecular weight low-pressure polyethylene introduced by Murtfeldt in 1958 for the systems of the steel industry justified the change from a pure trading company to a plastics manufacturer. This material, which is firmly anchored in conveyor and storage technology , is used worldwide today as a protected brand name Original Material "S" green in machines and systems that are used for packing , filling and transporting , but also for tasks, due to its characteristic sliding and wear properties which slide-supporting materials are used, such as B. as a sliding surface when moving bridges .

history

Beginnings

Former bakery on Moltkestrasse, corner of Kaiserstrasse, where the company was founded in 1954.

In 1954 the company was founded by Fritz Murtfeldt in a small bakery . Initially it consisted of just four employees and had specialized in the distribution of all types of industrial goods for mining and heavy industry. Plastics played no role in this early corporate phase. In mechanical engineering at that time, only synthetic resin plywood was used in special applications where thermoplastic plastics were to be used later .

Second half of the 20th century

When the steel industry needed an acid-resistant material for its systems at the end of the 1950s , the Murtfeldt company, which up until this point was still operating as a pure trading company , introduced an ultra-high molecular weight low-pressure polyethylene (PE-UHMW) in green in 1958 , which combined the acid resistance required by the steel industry but also excellent sliding properties in connection with a very high abrasion resistance. The increasing demand for resistant plastics from industry, mechanical engineering and plant construction prompted Fritz Murtfeldt in 1963 to set up his own production in the converted bakery for his plastic, which was sold under the name Original Material “S” green (“S” for acid-resistant).

Fritz Murtfeldt stopped trading in other industrial products in the 1960s.

In 1967, the foundation for the standard range was laid with the development and introduction of the first roller chain guide rails made from Murtfeldt plastics. In the years that followed, these plastic slide rails gradually replaced the wear-prone steel chain slide rails previously used in systems .

In 1969 Murtfeldt bought a company building in the Dortmund district of Barop, which housed production, sales and administration. In 1973 the construction of the new headquarters began at the current location in Dortmund- Brackel . Further construction phases followed.

In 1989 Murtfeldt Kunststoffe acquired the Dutch company Mata, with which it had been working closely since the late 1960s. In 1992, the Czech subsidiary Murtfeldt Plasty, sro was opened as a trading and contact partner for the growing Eastern European market, and in 1993 Murtfeldt Italia was founded in Varese, Italy .

"[...] Through the change from a trading company for the coal and steel industry to a globally operating, highly innovative family company in the field of plastics engineering, the Murtfeldt company represents a piece of contemporary industrial history in the Ruhr area [...]."

In 2014 Murtfeldt took over the adjoining company premises of the insolvent Van Netten chocolate factory, which was closed in 2013.
