The Pacific was a cruise ship that was built in 1971 by Rheinstahl Nordseewerke in Emden as a Sea Venture for flagship cruises.

Between 1975 and 2002 she drove for P&O Princess Cruises as Pacific Princess and gained fame at that time as the location of the American TV series Love Boat .

history

The construction of the ship was commissioned by the shipping company Norwegian Cruiseships from the North Sea Works at the end of the 1960s together with the sister ship Island Venture . Norwegian Cruiseships was half owned by the Norwegian shipowner Øivind Lorentzen and half by the Oslo shipping company Fearnley & Eger . Even during the construction of the first ship, there was such a massive miscalculation that a prefabricated construction under the agreed conditions would have led to the closure of the shipyard. After several managing directors of the shipyard were dismissed in autumn 1969 because of the high losses of millions, the new management, chaired by Rainer Wollmann, succeeded in renegotiating higher prices, whereupon the ships could be continued.

The launching of the ship took place on May 9, 1970 to the shipyard Nordseewerke place in Emden. On May 14, 1971, the finished ship was handed over to Flagship Cruises and named Sea Venture on the same day . It was used for cruises between the United States and Bermuda . The name of the ship goes back to the English sailing ship Sea Venture , which ran aground off Bermuda and whose survivors settled the island.

In April 1975 the ship was sold to P&O Princess Cruises together with the sister ship Island Venture . The couple was renamed Pacific Princess and Island Princess . The Pacific Princess was sold in 2001 by Abbey National Leasing 1 (“Princess Cruises”), but was chartered back until the end of 2002. At the end of 2002 the ship went to the Spanish cruise operator Pullmantur and was renamed Pacific . From June 9th to 16th, 2003 the ship was called Pacific Princess again . On October 20, 2008, the Pacific was acquired by Quail Cruises Ship Management and transferred to Templeton International Inc. the following month . The ship was operated by Quail Cruises Ship Management until 2012.

The Pacific 2008

In 2011 the Pacific in Genoa was supposed to undergo an asbestos removal . After the owner of the ship did not pay for the costs, the ship was foreclosed in February 2012 and acquired by a Turkish abandoner for 2.5 million euros in order to scrap the former "Love Boat". At the end of July 2013, the ship was towed to Aliağa , where it arrived on August 6th at the Aliağa shipyard for scrapping. She collided with the remains of the former cruise ship Rochdale One , which apparently caused a leak in the hull and water penetrated. Shortly afterwards, two workers died in the engine room from escaping exhaust gases. Another eight people were hospitalized with mild poisoning. Then the work had to be stopped because of the strong water ingress. Meanwhile, the ship had more than 40 degrees list to capsize and threatened. However, it could not be raised because the wreck of Rochdale One was in the way. After the Rochdale One was scrapped , she was pulled from the beach in late October and stranded elsewhere to re-stabilize and begin scrapping. However, this failed because the ship was listed again after a short time. At the beginning of November, the demolition of the now stabilized ship finally began. By the end of February 2014, the ship was almost completely demolished.

Pacific Princess as "Love Boat"

The Pacific Princess was the ship that mainly served as the backdrop for the ABC series Love Boat , broadcast in the USA from 1977 . The Pacific Princess was featured in almost every episode of the series, which was primarily produced in a studio . The term Love Boat got a lot of prominence in the advertising of Princess Cruises and although the sister ship Island Princess and other cruise lines were also featured in the series, it eventually became synonymous with the Pacific Princess .
