Black Books is a British comedy - TV show , written and directed by Graham Linehan and Dylan Moran . It first aired in the UK on Channel 4 on September 29, 2000. It aired three seasons of six episodes each. The title Black Books refers to the bookstore "Black" in the London borough of Bloomsbury , in which the series mostly takes place. At the same time black books the English name for Black Books . The series was a hit with critics and won a BAFTA award in both 2001 and 2005 , and a Bronze Rose at the 2001 Rose d'Or Festival .

action

The series is set in the antiquarian bookstore "Black Books" in London and revolves around the owner Bernard Ludwig Black, his employee Manny Bianco and his best friend, Fran Katzenjammer. Black despises his customers and avoids any effort to devote himself entirely to his books, alcohol and cigarettes. His employee Manny Bianco is exactly the opposite: the former accountant is friendly and easy to inspire. Fran Katzenjammer, who actually runs a gift shop in the neighborhood, is mostly in the bookstore, whose back room Bernard and Manny also use as living space. She gives up her shop between the events of the first and second season.

background

The Collinge & Clark bookstore that sold Black Books in outdoor scenes.

A pilot episode was performed at the 1998 Channel 4 Sitcom Festival . Here the series was much darker, as a result, initially Bernard and later Manny also plan to commit suicide. Frans Rolle was called Valerie and was a philosophy lecturer. This episode marked Dylan Moran's debut as a television writer. Linehan, who co-wrote the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted , was brought on board by producer Burdett-Coutts. However, the figures were created by Moran.

The fictional bookstore is located in the London borough of Bloomsbury, not far from Russell Square . Pictures of a real bookstore, Collinge & Clark, at 13 Leigh Street in Bloomsbury were used in the exterior shots.

Dylan Moran is known to a wider audience through Simon Pegg's Shaun of the Dead . Simon Pegg made a guest appearance in the first episode of Season 3 ( Manny Come Home ) as a shift supervisor at the competing bookstore Goliath Books . The audio commentary on Shaun of the Dead shows that the producers consider black books to be a counterpart to the Channel 4 sitcom Spaced , which Simon Pegg promoted. Other Spaced cast members are also making guest appearances, and in one episode Manny speaks to Spaced character Twist Morgan. Nick Frost can be seen at the beginning of the episode "The Big Lockout" as a security technician , Jessica Stevenson appears as Fran's yoga friend in "Hello Sun"; Peter Serafinowicz is the radio announcer whose voice arouses Fran unrestrainedly; Omid Djalili is a seedy photographer on “He's Leaving Home”; Rob Brydon can be seen in "The Fixer" and both Lucy Davis (from The Office and Shaun of the Dead ) and Olivia Colman (from the Simon Pegg film Hot Fuzz ) portray Fran's school friends in "Elephants and Hens".
