Hattie Jacques

Hattie Jacques (born Josephina Edwina Jaques on February 7, 1922 in Sandgate , Kent , Great Britaindied October 6, 1980 in London ) was a British actress .

Life

Jacques first trained as a hairdresser. Due to the Second World War, she first worked as a nurse and later as a welder. That's when she discovered her talent for making people laugh. Having a fairly large physique, she also used humor as a defense.

She came into contact with show business when she accompanied her brother to work. This was an elevator driver in a London theater. She was hired as an actress and singer. Her portrayal of an oversized sorceress became well known. She later returned to the Little Players Theater in London as an actress, producer and playwright.

Hattie's career took off, she was now also engaged for stage shows. Her singing and her rough sense of humor made her so well known that she was often brought in for the Is ja mad film series. Also on the radio she could be heard again and again in comedy shows. She met her partner Eric Sykes , with whom she worked on various television series for over 30 years.

Hattie was very popular with her colleagues. Many of them saw her as a kind of sister because of her gentle nature and sense of humor. The Ist-ja-irre crew gave her the nickname Übermutter .

Hattie was married to actor John Le Mesurier from 1949 to 1965 . She gave birth to two sons. Although she and John later divorced, they remained friends.

In 1980, Hattie Jacques died of a heart attack at the age of 58.

In 2000, a biographical documentary entitled The Unforgettable Hattie Jacques was broadcast on British television.
