Sandgate is a village and civil parish in the county of Kent , England . The parish had 4,639 inhabitants in 2011 and is administratively part of the Folkestone and Hythe District . The place is located directly on the English Channel coast .

Because of its strategic location on the canal near France, various defenses were built in Sandgate, including six Martello Towers and Sandgate Castle.

history

HG Wells lived in Sandgate from 1901 to 1909 , while his worldwide fame was growing. British actress Hattie Jacques was born in Sandgate in 1922 . From 1934 Sandgate was part of Folkestone , but has been a separate parish again since 2004.
