action
Richard is a frustrated artist in the middle of his midlife crisis. After causing public nuisance, he finally comes to court and has to serve community hours as punishment. His first assignment leads him to meet Jane Hatchard, a young woman suffering from Lou Gehrig Syndrome ( ALS ). Her illness is already in its final stages, but Jane takes it with serenity and flair. The two have not got off to a particularly good start, but Jane ultimately reveals a secret to Richard. She wants to lose her innocence and wants him to help her. Meanwhile, Richard is building an airplane from old paintings and garden tools. Soon he knows how to help Jane: a gigolo has to be hired, and in order to pay this he is determined to rob a bank. Jane doesn't know where her head is.
criticism
Der Spiegel criticized in 1999 in a short review: "The film by Paul Greengrass is trimmed so clearly on compassion mesh and taboo that [sic] the great Bonham Carter can not prevent a belly landing again."
In Kulturnews it is said about the film: “It could have been a tragic-comic romance, if it weren't for the metaphor of flying and the very sweetly swelling film music, which doesn't accompany, but rather urges the viewer which emotion to experience next . "
The Wiener Zeitung , on the other hand, judged in its 2005 film review: "Sensitively staged and superbly played, the film is a hymn to life, despite illness, pain and death , an " ode to joy " , full of strength, ingenuity and poetry."
