Graeme Knowles

Graeme Paul Knowles CVO (born September 25, 1951 in Woburn , Bedfordshire ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England from 2003 to 2007 .

Knowles was born to Stan Knowles and his wife Grace. His parents lived on Westfield Road in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. His father was the headmaster at Eaton Bray School. His mother worked as a school secretary. Knowles has another brother. He first attended Regent House and Beecroft County Primary School, then from 1963 to 1970 the Dunstable Grammar School. He studied theology at King's College London ; he completed his senior year at St Augustine's College in Canterbury . In 1974 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1975 he was ordained a priest . His priests career began from 1974 to 1979 as Vicar ( Curate ) at St Peter-in-Thanet Church in Broadstairs in the county of Kent . He was then from 1979 Precentor ( Precentor ) and "Senior Curate" at the Parish Church of St Peter-at-Leeds in Leeds . In 1981 he was Precentor ( Precentor ) and Residenzkanoniker ( Canon residentiary ; Canon) at the Portsmouth Cathedral . He was simultaneously Kaplan ( Chaplain ) at the Cathedral of Portsmouth. From 1985 to 1987 he held the position of “Chapter Clerk” there; In this function, as a church official, he was responsible for administrative matters in the cathedral chapter . In 1987 he became pastor ( vicar ) of Leigh Park ; in addition he took over in 1990 the function of the country dean of Havant ( Rural Dean of Havant ). In 1993 he was Archdeacon of Portsmouth ( Archdeacon of Portsmouth ; head of a church district). He held this office until 1999.

In December 1998, Knowles became the Dean of Carlisle ( Dean of Carlisle appointed). He held this office from January 1999 to 2003. In November 2003, Knowles was appointed Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England, succeeding Noel Jones . He was ordained bishop on December 4, 2003 by David Hope , Archbishop of York , at York Minster ; his enthronement was held on January 17, 2004 at Peel Cathedral in Peel on the Isle of Man . On September 20, 2007, Knowles was named Dean of St Paul's Cathedral ( Dean of St Paul’s ) by a letters patent , succeeding John Moses , who had retired in 2006. On November 1, 2011, Knowles resigned from the office of Dean of St Paul's. Knowles' resignation came in the context of the anti-capitalist protests of the Occupy London movement , which had camped for weeks in front of St Paul's Cathedral and demonstrated. Knowles had temporarily closed St Paul's Cathedral to the faithful. After the cathedral chapter decided to forcibly remove the demonstrators by security forces of the London Authorities, Knowles resigned due to strong backlash.

In his retirement, Knowles retired to Bury St Edmunds ; there he has been working since the end of April 2012 as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich . He was officially inaugurated on April 29, 2012 by Bishop Nigel Stock in a solemn service at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, in Bury St Edmunds. Knowles is also an Honorary Chaplain for the Royal Naval Reserve .

Knowles is married. His wife Susan was an English teacher at the Girls' Public Day School Trust (GPDST) School in Southsea . Hobbies include vacation and leisure , reading of EF Benson's novels , collecting and singing Victorian and Edwardian ballads and songs, architecture , fine dining, and enjoying fine wine .
