Nigel Stock (Bishop)

William Nigel Stock (born January 29, 1950 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in the Church of England from 2007 to late September 2013 .

Life

Stock grew up in his native Newcastle upon Tyne . He studied theology at St Cuthbert's Society , the third oldest college at the University of Durham . In preparation for the priesthood he attended Ripon Hall College in Cuddesdon , near Oxford .

In 1976 he was ordained a deacon , and in 1977 he was ordained a priest . He took his first pastor from 1976 to 1979 as vicar ( curate ) at St. Peter's Church in Stockton-on-Tees in the Diocese of Durham . From 1979 to 1984 he was pastor ( priest-in-charge ) at the parish of St Peter’s in Taraka , in the diocese of Aipo Rongo in Papua New Guinea . From 1985 to 1991 he was pastor ( vicar ) at St Mark Church in Shiremoor in the Diocese of Newcastle. In 1991 he became dean ( Team Rector ) of North Shields , in 1992 he was also dean ( Rural Dean ) of Tynemouth ; he held both offices until 1988. At the same time he was from 1997 to 1998 honorary cathedral chaplain ( Honorary Canon ) at Newcastle Cathedral. From 1998 to 2000 he was Canon Residentiary at Durham Cathedral ; at the same time he was from 1999 to 2000 University Chaplain ( Chaplain ) at Gray College, Durham University.

In 2000 he was appointed suffragan Bishop of Stockport in the Diocese of Chester ; he held this office until 2007. In May 2007 he was named Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich to succeed John Hubert Richard Lewis . He officially took office in autumn 2007. At the end of September 2013 he resigned from this office. In October 2013 he became a bishop in Lambeth ( Bishop at Lambeth ). In this capacity he is a direct associate of the Archbishop of Canterbury , Justin Welby . In this capacity, Stock supports the work of the Archbishop in the House of Bishops, in the General Synod of the Church of England and in the Archbishop's Council.

Stock also exercised several church duties and honorary offices. Since 1986 he has been the Commissary of the Archbishop of Papua New Guinea. He is a member of the Appointments Committee of the General Synod of the Church of England. He volunteers to support the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Fund , which grants financial help to farmers in need .

Membership in the House of Lords

In 2011, Stock became the next senior bishop of the Church of England as Spiritual Lord member of the House of Lords on the principle of anciency . He succeeded John Saxbee , Bishop of Lincoln , in the House of Lords . His official introduction to the House of Lords took place on March 8, 2011. At the end of September 2013, he left the House of Lords due to his appointment as Bishop at Lambeth .

Working in public

In January 2010, Stock consecrated the newly restored vaulted ceiling of St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds , Suffolk , on a specially erected platform 150 feet above the ground .

Along with Martyn Jarrett , Michael Langrish , John Richard Packer , Michael Francis Perham and Alan Smith, Stock belongs to the group of ten Anglican bishops who are in favor of the alternative vote in the election of members of the House of Commons and thus for the reform of the exclusive majority suffrage pronounced.

Private

Stock is married to his wife Carolyne and has three daughters. His leisure activities and hobbies include stick reading , walking , photography and traveling . He is also particularly interested in the fields of history and art . He is a supporter of the Newcastle United football club .
