Richard Lewis (Bishop)

John Hubert Richard Lewis (born December 10, 1943 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in the Church of England from 1997 to 2007 .

Lewis attended Radley College and studied at King's College London . In preparation for his priesthood he studied theology at St Boniface College in Warminster . In 1967 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1968 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1967 to 1970 as vicar ( curate ) in Hexham , near Newcastle-upon-Tyne . From 1970 to 1977 he worked as an "Industrial Chaplain" (factory chaplain). From 1977 to 1982 he was a Communications Officer in Durham . From 1982 to 1987 he was "Chaplain for Agriculture" in Hereford . From 1987 to 1992 he was archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of Ludlow ( Archdeacon of Ludlow ). In 1992 he was ordained a bishop . From 1992 to 1997 he was suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Bath and Wells in the Church of England as "Bishop of Taunton" . In 1997 he became the 9th Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich , succeeding John Dennis . In 2007 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich by Nigel Stock .

Lewis was a member of the House of Lords in his capacity as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich from January 2002 to late July 2007 until his retirement as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich as Spiritual Lord .
