Working in public

One focus of McCulloch in his work in the Diocese of Manchester is in particular his commitment to interreligious dialogue. He made connections between the various religious groups and built up a network of cooperation.

In particular, McCulloch called for greater cooperation among all churches in combating violence among young people and crime in youth gangs.

In questions of canon law, McCulloch takes a more liberal viewpoint overall. This was particularly evident in his attitude towards the question of homosexuality . In his opinion, the issue of homosexuality among clerics should not be swept under the carpet by the official church. In 2008 he criticized the bishops who threatened not to participate in the Lambeth conference because of the question of homosexuality .

In 2005 he took part in the funeral ceremonies for Roger Schutz , the founder of the Taizé Community , and read an excerpt from the book of Isaiah .

In June 2007, McCulloch sat down against the PlayStation game Resistance: Fall of Man . It includes detailed views of Manchester Cathedral , which has been infested by aliens and is about to be killed by the protagonist. Sony responded that the game was not based on reality and that all legal requirements had been complied with when it was published.

Speaking about Gunther von Hagens' public inquiries in May 2008, McCulloch said he was concerned that the bodies were being used for some form of insane horror show.

McCulloch was one of the signatories of a declaration on October 7, 2008, calling for the protection of children from emotional and physical violence.

McCulloch said in December 2008 that the financial and economic crisis was leading to a return to traditional values. In his Christmas sermon in 2008, he accused the government of driving people into debt.

In May 2009, the Muslim Aaqil Ahmed became the new head of religion at the BBC . This drew critical voices, especially from the Church of England . McCulloch said that the Church of England has a fundamental interest in the representation of Christianity and other religions on the BBC program. Religion must be presented in the BBC's radio and television programs, particularly in the light of the country's Judeo-Christian heritage.
