David Walker (Bishop)

David Stuart Walker (born May 30, 1957 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Manchester in the Church of England since 2013 .

Walker attended Manchester Grammar School. In 1975 he took part in the International Mathematical Olympiad and won a bronze medal. He studied at King's College, University of Cambridge . There he graduated in 1981 with a Master of Arts . Further studies in theology took place at Queen's College, University of Birmingham . In 1983 he was ordained a deacon . He began his priestly career from 1983 to 1986 as vicar ( curate ) at St Mary Church in Handsworth , a suburb of Sheffield , in the county of South Yorkshire . From 1986 to 1991 he was pastor ( Team Vicar ) and works chaplain ( Industrial Chaplain ) at the Maltby Team Ministry in Sheffield. From 1991 to 1995 he was pastor in Bramley and Ravenfield ( Vicar of Bramley and Ravenfield ), two parishes near Sheffield. From 1995, his jurisdiction was expanded to include the parishes in Hooton Roberts and Braithwell. ( Team Rector of Bramley and Ravenfield with Hooton Roberts and Braithwell ). In 2000 he was Ehrenkanoniker ( Honorary Canon , Canon) at the Sheffield Cathedral . Since 2000 he was as "Bishop of Dudley" Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of Worcester in the Church of England.

In June 2013, his appointment as Bishop of Manchester was announced. He succeeded Nigel McCulloch , who retired on January 17, 2013. On October 7, 2013, his election was formally confirmed (Confirmation of Election) during a service in York Minster by John Sentamu , Archbishop of York . His inauguration and enthronement took place on October 19, 2013 at Manchester Cathedral .

David Walker is married. He has two children with his wife Sue. His areas of interest include politics , cricket , hiking , math puzzles, reading, and communication studies .
