Timothy "Tim" Martin Thornton (born April 14, 1957 ) is a British Anglican theologian and since 2008 Bishop of Truro in the Church of England .

Life

Thornton grew up as the son of a pastor in Plymouth . He attended Devonport High School for Boys in Plymouth, Devon . Thornton studied theology at the University of Southampton , where he graduated with an honors degree in theology. In preparation for the priesthood he attended St Stephen's House Theological College, Oxford .

In 1980 he was in the Cathedral of Wakefield for Deacon ordained in 1981 took place the ordination. In 1981 he became parish vicar in Todmorden in the diocese of Wakefield. In 1982 he became a parish administrator ( Priest in Charge ) at St Peter's Parish Church in Walsden , also in the Diocese of Wakefield. He held this church office until 1985. From 1985 to 1987 he served as a university chaplain at Cardiff University in the Diocese of Llandaff , Wales . In 1987, the then Bishop of Wakefield, David Hope , called him back to Wakefield and made him his private chaplain.

In 1988 Thornton became Diocesan Director in Wakefield. There he was responsible for the selection and training of candidates for the priesthood . He continued to serve as private chaplain to David Hope from 1991 to 1994 after he was called to be Bishop of London .

In 1994 Thornton became rector of the North Thames Ministerial Training Course in London , where, in addition to training candidates for the priesthood, he was also responsible for developing and introducing a new curriculum for the formation of priests. In addition to his teaching activities, Thornton completed his Master of Arts in church history at King's College London .

In 1998 he became a pastor at St Mary Abbots Church in Kensington . In 2001 Thornton was ordained a bishop at Southwark Cathedral , London . In 2001 he was named suffragan bishop of Sherborne . As regional bishop Thornton was responsible for the county of Dorset and had the task of organizing the pastoral care both in the country parishes, as well as in the tourist areas around Bournemouth , Weymouth and Poole . During this time, it was important to him to create connections between church and university . He served on the board of directors of Bournemouth University . He was also the patron of the Children's Hospice, a hospice for terminally ill children, in Poole. In 2007 Thornton was appointed Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Dorset.

In 2008 Thornton was named the 15th Bishop of Truro. The official inauguration took place on March 7, 2009 with a welcome service in the Cathedral of Truro.

Thornton has been President of the YMCA in Cornwall since 2009 .

Working in public

Thornton is known as a cosmopolitan, experienced and sensitive cleric and first-class mediator of different points of view. Thornton sees the future of the church as positive overall. He believed that the gospel could be imparted to all people. The church must go out into the world and teach the faith .

Thornton's other religious interests are interreligious dialogue and cooperation with the Anglican Church in Africa , in particular with the Episcopal Church of the Sudan . Together with representatives of the Methodist Church , he also organized pilgrimages in the Diocese of Salisbury .

On the occasion of his appointment as Bishop of Truro, Thornton named in particular the personal commitment for the county of Cornwall and the representation of the interests of the county in parliament as the focus of his, possibly at some point coming his work in the House of Lords .

Thornton was one of the signatories of a declaration on October 7, 2008, calling for the protection of children from emotional and physical violence.

On the occasion of the upcoming local elections in Great Britain in June 2009 , Thornton and Michael Langrish , the Bishop of Exeter , called in May 2009 on citizens to exercise their right to vote despite their general political dissatisfaction and current political scandals . In the run-up to the elections, several high-ranking British politicians and members of the government came under massive public criticism for unclear expense reports.

On the occasion of the diocesan synod taking place in Truro , Thornton emphasized the responsibility of the church for the protection of the environment . The church must take a leading role in preserving God's creation. Humans also have to understand and accept their individual responsibility.

Thornton is considered an opponent of same-sex marriages .

Membership in the House of Lords

Thornton has officially been a member of the House of Lords as Spiritual Lord since January 31, 2013 . In the House of Lords, he succeeds Nigel McCulloch , Bishop of Manchester, who retired in mid-January 2013. On April 22, 2013, he was officially introduced in the House of Lords and took the oath of office.

Private

Thornton is married to Sian Thornton, who works as a teacher and headmistress. He is the father of two grown children, a son and a daughter. His leisure activities include Thornton rugby , cricket , reading novels and books on church history, and exercise and fitness .
