Stephen George Platten (born May 17, 1947 in Southgate ) is a British Anglican clergyman and was Bishop of Wakefield from 2003 to 2014 .

Life

Platten was born to George Henry and Marjory Platten. The father was a manager of a large textile company. Stephen Platten attended the Company's School in London . From 1966 to 1968 he worked for Shell International Petroleum Co Ltd . Platten attended London University , where he studied education and science . In these subjects he made a Bachelor of Education there in 1972 .

Platten studied theology at Ripon College in Cuddesdon from 1972 to 1975 . He was ordained a deacon in 1975 and a priest in the same year in the Diocese of Oxford . From 1975 to 1978 he was a chaplain at St Andrews Church in Headington , Oxford. From 1978 to 1983 he was chaplain and lecturer in ethics at Lincoln Theological College in Lincoln . From 1983 to 1989 Platten was cathedral clergyman at Portsmouth Cathedral in the Diocese of Portsmouth and at the same time diocesan director. Among other things, he was responsible for the selection and preparation of candidates for priesthood within the diocese. He was also treasurer of the cathedral and chairman of the finance committee. Platten was also responsible for the training of priests and for lay formation in the diocese. In addition, he was responsible for the supervision and technical instruction of the deacons in a pilot project in the diocese.

During his time in Portsmouth, he was also one of the two founders of the Society for Study of Christian Ethics , which is engaged in the teaching and scientific research of Christian ethics and moral theology . He was chairman of the Society for Study of Christian Ethics from 1983 to 1989 .

From 1990 to 1995 he was secretary to the Archbishop of Canterbury , responsible for ecumenical issues. At the same time he was also an honorary minister at Canterbury Cathedral from 1990 to 1995 . He was also the Anglican Co-Secretary of the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission .

From 1995 to 2003 Platten was Dean of Norwich . As Dean of Norwich, Platten was in charge of the administration of Norwich Cathedral and was therefore part of the bishop's management staff at that time .

He was Bishop of Wakefield from July 2003 until the diocese was dissolved in April 2014 .

During his church career, Platten also held numerous other offices in church organizations, charitable institutions and other bodies. Since 1989 he has been a member of the management team of SCM-Canterbury Press Ltd, and since 2001 Chairman of the SCM-Canterbury Press Trust. From 1990 to 1995 he was also the director of the Nikaean Club , a guest house for official visitors to the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England . Since 1998 he has been a member of the Archbishop's Council Hymns Ancient and Modern . He has also been a member of the Church of England's Faith and Order Advisory Group since 2000 . Since 2005, Platten has been Chairman of the Church of England's Liturgical Committee and a member of the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England .

Platten has received several honorary degrees. In 2003 he received a Bachelor of Divinity from Trinity College of the University of Oxford , also in 2003 also the honorary degree as Doctor of Letters ( Hon DLitt ) of the University of East Anglia .

Platten is also the author of numerous books. He published over 40 articles of his own in respected newspapers and journals . He also wrote over 120 critiques and reviews .

He is married and has two sons. His wife Rosslie's work includes children with special needs.

Membership in the House of Lords

Platten was from 2009 to 2014 as Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords . He succeeded Graham Dow , former Bishop of Carlisle . He gave his inaugural speech on June 30, 2009. His political interests included records international affairs , social ethics , especially asylum and refugee issues, as well as individual ethical issues, environmental protection , media standards and publishing . As a representative of the House of Lords, Platten was also a member of the Parliamentarians Network for Conflict Prevention and Human Security .

Working in public

Platen's church work focuses on interreligious dialogue and cooperation with other religious communities . Platten particularly advocated close contacts with the Catholic Church . He is chairman of the Anglican Center in Rome .

In the 1990s, Platten established intensive contacts and parish partnerships with Malkhaz Songulashvili , Archbishop of the Evangelical Baptist Church in Georgia . Since then, Platten has been friends with Songulashvili.

In 2007, in view of the Lambeth Conference , which was to take place again in 2008, Platten turned against distorted news coverage. In particular, he accused the media of predicting the failure of the conference through their reporting. The mere existence of different positions within the Church of England , for example on the question of homosexuality , does not make the conference pointless or unnecessary.

On October 7, 2008, Platten was one of the signatories of a declaration calling for the protection of children from emotional and physical violence.

In November 2009, Platten led the festive service for the official elevation of St John's Parish Church in Halifax to the minster .

In November 2009, in Mirfield , West Yorkshire , Platten met with Anglican Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu . Platten paid tribute to Tutu in a newspaper article following his visit as a churchman who had the ability to renew the faith among leading Anglicans. Platten highlighted Tutu's dignity, generosity, and humility in conveying the faith.
