Diocese of Bath and Wells

The Diocese of Bath and Wells ( Latin : Dioecesis Bathoniensis et Wellensis ) is an Anglican diocese in the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury of the Church of England with its seat in Bath . It was a Roman Catholic diocese until the English Reformation .

history

Bath Cathedral

The Diocese of Bath and Wells was established in 909 from cessions of territory from the Diocese of Sherborne as the Diocese of Wells . Æthelhelm became the first bishop . In 1090 the bishopric was moved to Bath. Bishop Savaric FitzGeldewin moved in 1197 with the permission of Pope Celestine III. the seat of the Diocese of Bath in Glastonbury Abbey . On March 18, 1220 was by Pope Honorius III. the seat of the Diocese of Bath and Glastonbury moved again to Bath. The diocese of Bath was renamed the Diocese of Bath and Wells on January 3, 1245 .

The last Roman Catholic bishop, Gilbert Bourne , was deposed by Queen Elizabeth I in 1559 . Bishop Gilbert Bourne died on September 10, 1569.

The diocese of Bath and Wells was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Canterbury as a suffragan .
