Sherborne diocese
The diocese of Sherborne ( Latin : Dioecesis Scireburnensis ) was a Roman Catholic diocese located in what is now the United Kingdom , with its seat in Sherborne .
history
The diocese of Sherborne was established in 705 from cessions of territory by the diocese of Leicester . Aldhelm became the first bishop . The diocese of Sherborne comprised the south-west of England . In 909 the diocese of Sherborne gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the diocese of Wells and the establishment of the diocese of Crediton .
In 1058 the diocese of Sherborne was merged with the diocese of Ramsbury . This resulted in the Diocese of Salisbury .
The diocese of Sherborne was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Canterbury as a suffragan .
