Diocese of Salisbury
The Diocese of Salisbury ( Latin : Dioecesis Saresberiensis ) is an Anglican diocese in the ecclesiastical province of Canterbury of the Church of England with its seat in Salisbury . It was a Roman Catholic diocese until the English Reformation .
history
The diocese of Salisbury was created in 1075 as the diocese of Sarum as a result of the amalgamation of the dioceses of Ramsbury and Sherborne . On March 29, 1218 the diocese of Sarum was by Pope Honorius III. renamed the Diocese of Salisbury .
The last Roman Catholic bishop, Francis Mallet , fled England in 1559 .
The diocese of Salisbury was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Canterbury as a suffragan .
