Working in public

In 2009, Packer was one of the supporters of the Living Ghost Statement , a campaign by the Church Action against Poverty movement to combat destitution and homelessness among asylum seekers .

In 2005, Packer asked the UK Home Office to conduct a public inquiry into an asylum seeker from Angola who committed suicide while in detention. It was previously criticized that despite several inquiries, the authority had not responded to the asylum application for ten months and had the asylum seeker and his 13-year-old son arrested without prior notice.

In June 2003, Packer was one of the Bishops of the Church of England who expressly supported the nomination and solidarity of Jeffrey John , an openly gay priest in a committed relationship, as Auxiliary Bishop of Reading by the Archbishop of Canterbury , Rowan Williams manifested with the decision of Williams. Packer said that John's calling would enable the community of bishops to hear the experiences of the gay community .

In 2007, in his sermon on Maundy Thursday , Packer drew parallels between the suffering of Jesus Christ and the uncertainties that priests are exposed to on their behalf to preach the word of God. Packer took up the current case of the murder of the priest Paul Bennett and emphasized the dangers for priests, to which they are constantly exposed emotionally and physically because of their pastoral work.

On October 7, 2008, Packer was among the signatories of a declaration calling for the protection of children from emotional and physical violence.

In January 2009 he spoke about the separation of church and state . Packer supported the view of Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and said that the Church of England would be able to live well with the model of a separation of church and state. It had previously been speculated that the Labor Party was pushing for this step.
