Michael Francis Perham

Michael Francis Perham (born November 8, 1947 in Dorchester , † April 17, 2017 ) was a British Anglican clergyman . He was Bishop of Gloucester from 2004 to 2014 .

life and career

Perham attended Hardye's School in Dorchester, Dorset , from 1959 to 1965 . He studied from 1971 to 1974 theology at Keble College of the University of Oxford . There he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1974 and a Master of Arts in 1978 . In preparation for the priesthood, he attended Ripon Theological College in Cuddesdon from 1974 to 1976 . He was ordained a deacon in 1976 and a priest in 1977 . From 1976 to 1981 he was assistant vicar at St Mary's in the London borough of Addington in Croydon . From 1981 to 1984 he served as the local chaplain to then Bishop of Winchester , John Taylor . From 1984 to 1992 Perham was Rector and Dean ( Team Rector ) of the Oakdale Dean's Office in Poole . From 1992 to 1998 he was Domgeistlicher and cantor of the Cathedral of Norwich . In Norwich he was Deputy Dean from 1998 to 2000. During the same period he was the last provost of Derby . From 2000 to 2004 he was dean there.

Perham was Bishop of Gloucester from 2004 to 2014 . From August 2014, Perham's diocese was provisionally led by Martyn Snow . In March 2015 Rachel Treweek succeeded Perham as Diocesan Bishop of Gloucester.

Perham was also active as a writer. He was married and had four daughters. His wife Alison is a specialist in palliative care .

Memberships and honorary positions

During his church career, Perham also held numerous other offices in church organizations, charitable institutions and other bodies. From 1979 to 1984 Perham was secretary of the Doctrine Commission of the Church of England . He from 1986 to 2001 member of the Liturgical Commission of the Church of England (Liturgical Commission) . From 1988 to 1992 he was a member of the Archdiocesan Commission for Church Music ( Archbishop's Commission on Church Music at). From 1989 to 1992 and since 1993 he has been a member of the General Synod of the Anglican Church. From 1990 to 1997 he was chairman of the non-profit aid organization PRAXIS. From 1994 to 2001 he was chairman of the Cathedrals' Liturgy Group . From 1996 to 2001 Perham was a member of the Cathedrals' Fabric Commission for England . From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Archbishops Council of the Church of England . From 1999 to 2001 he was a member of the Church Heritage Forum .

From 2000 to 2004 he was a Fellow of Woodard Corporation , which operates a network of Anglican schools. From 2001 to 2004 he chaired the Business Committee of the General Synod of the Church of England. Since 2002 he has been a member of the governing body of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK), which is dedicated to promoting the Christian faith, and has been its chairman since 2006.

Since 2004 Perham has been director of the Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company and since 2005 president of the Alcuin Club . Also since 2005 he was Bishop Protector of the European Province of the Society of Saint Francis . From 2007 to 2009 he was chairman of the Hospital Chaplaincies Council . Since 2007 he was deputy chairman of the Mission and Public Affairs Council of the Church of England, president of the Retired Clergy Association and vice-rector of the Board of University of Gloucestershire (Council of the University of Gloucester) . Since 2009, Perham has served on the Department of Health Advisory Board for the End of Life Care program and chaired the board of directors at Ripon College in Cuddesdon.

In 2003 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music . In 2007 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Gloucester .

Membership in the House of Lords

Perham was from October 27, 2009 to November 21, 2014 as Spiritual Lord of the House of Lords . He was there the successor of Kenneth Stevenson , the resigned bishop of Portsmouth for health reasons . His political interest areas Perham counted the rural development, constitutional issues , the education , international development policy , government and administration at local and national level, marriage - and family policy , women's policy , urban renewal and housing , representing the counties of cities Herefordshire and Shropshire . Working in public

Perham paid tribute to the visionary force behind the establishment of the National Health Service after World War II , praised the social achievements of the health system and emphasized the vital role of the National Health Service in providing universal medical care.

Perham was among the signatories of a declaration on October 7, 2008, calling for the protection of children from emotional and physical violence.

At the end of 2008, Perham initiated an intensive pastoral cooperation at the diocese of Gloucester with the Diocese of West Tanzania in Tanzania and the Diocese of El Camino Real in the United States . He later signed a partnership agreement. In the spring of 2009, Perham went to Tanzania to deepen the contacts that had been established. In the summer of 2009, Perham visited the partner diocese in California .

resignation

In the summer of 2014, Perham announced his resignation as Bishop of Gloucester after allegations against him that he had sexually molested two young women, one of whom was a minor, as a priest in the 1980s. The police investigation into the matter was closed on October 14, 2014. On November 21, 2014, Perham officially resigned from his office as Bishop of Gloucester, thus ending his membership in the House of Lords.
