Justin Portal Welby (born January 6, 1956 in London ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Durham in the Church of England from June 2011 to December 2012 . Since January 2013 he has been the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury to succeed Rowan Williams ; his inauguration took place on March 21, 2013.

Life

Welby was officially born as the son of Gavin Bernard Welby and his wife Jane Gillian Welby, née Portal. Accordingly, on his father's side, Bernard Weiler, a German-Jewish immigrant, was considered his grandfather, although Welby only learned of this as an adult. His mother remarried in 1975, the British manager and life peer Baron Charles Williams .

In April 2016, however, it was revealed that Welby's father was not, as was assumed, Gavin Welby, but Anthony Montague Browne (deceased 2013), Winston Churchill's private secretary . Browne and Jane Portal (married Welby) had a brief relationship before Jane was married. A paternity test, which Welby had carried out after the Daily Telegraph published , showed that there was a 99.9779% probability that he was the son of Browne. Welby and his mother commented on the result with surprise, pointing out that Justin Welby was born exactly nine months after Jane Porter and Gavin Welby were married. Thanks to the results of the examination, Welby now has a half-sister who is three years older than him.

Welby attended Eton College . He studied law and history at Trinity College of Cambridge University . In 1978 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts there ; In 1990, the Master of Arts ( Oxbridge and Dublin) followed there. After completing his bachelor's degree, he worked for ten years as a finance manager in the oil industry , with professional positions in London and Paris . He found through an Alpha course at the "Church of the Holy Trinity" in London's Brompton to the Christian faith and then studied from 1989 to 1992 theology at St John's College of Durham University in Durham . In 1992 he was ordained a deacon . In 1993 he was ordained a priest . From 1992 to 1995 he was Vicar ( Curate ) in Nuneaton in the county of Warwickshire , with responsibility also for the communities Chilvers Coton and Astley.

On October 28, 2011 Welby was officially ordained a bishop in York Cathedral. He was inducted into office on November 26, 2011 with a solemn service in Durham Cathedral .

On November 9, 2012, Welby was named as the successor to Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury. The office of Prime Minister announced the decision of Elizabeth II , which she had made as Fidei defensor (Head of the Church of England).
