Paul Butler (Bishop)

Paul Roger Butler (born September 18, 1955 in Kingston upon Thames ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham from 2010 to 2014 and has been Bishop of Durham in the Church of England since 2014 .

Life

Butler attended Kingston Grammar School in Kingston upon Thames in south-west London . He studied at the University of Nottingham , where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English and history . During this time he was a parishioner at Christ Church in Chilwell . From 1977 to 1978 he worked as a secretary at the evangelical Christian charity Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF). He then studied theology at Wycliffe Hall College at Oxford University from 1980 to 1983 .

From 1983 to 1987 he was vicar (curate) at All Saints Church , at the same time with responsibility for the Holy Trinity Church in Wandsworth in the Diocese of Southwark . From 1987 to 1994 he worked as an evangelist at the Scripture Union , a Bible society, in Inner London , from 1992 onwards he was Deputy Head of Mission . From 1987 to 1994 he was a Non-Stpendiary Minister at St. Paul in East Ham in the Diocese of Chelmsford . From 1994 he moved permanently to the Diocese of Chelmsford. He was there from 1994 to 1997 pastor (priest-in-charge) at St. Mary's Church in Walthamstow , simultaneously with responsibility for St Stephen , and pastor at St Luke's Church . From 1997 to 2004 he was Dean (Team Rector) in Walthamstow, at the same time also Regional Dean ( Area Dean ) of Waltham Forest . In 2004 he succeeded Jonathan Gledhill as Suffragan Bishop of Southampton . In this role he was also responsible for the Channel Islands of Guernsey and Jersey . He was ordained bishop on June 24, 2004 by the Archbishop of Canterbury , Rowan Williams , and ordained in office at Southwark Cathedral . In June 2009 he was named Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham to succeed George Henry Cassidy , who retired in September 2009 . He was inducted into office on February 27, 2010 with a solemn service at Southwell Minster .

In September 2013 it was announced that Butler would become the new Bishop of Durham . He thus succeeded Justin Welby . He was elected Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013 . In January 2014, Butler's election as Bishop of Durham was officially confirmed in a solemn service at York Minster . He is also formally Bishop of Durham. He will be enthroned on February 22nd, 2014 at Durham Cathedral .

Butler is a recognized theologian . He has written several books , essays , magazines and radio reports on various topics of the Christian faith. His publications include the books Reaching Children (1992), Following Jesus (1993), Friends of God (1993), Want to be in God's Family? (1994), Growing Up in God's Family (1994), Reaching Families (1995) and Temptation and Testing (2007). He also wrote a contribution to the anthology Through the Eyes of a Child (2009).

Working in public

The focus of his pastoral church work was on religious work with children and young people, especially in introducing children and young people to the Christian faith . As part of his commitment to the Scripture Union , he organized annual children's and youth camps in the county of Kent until 2004 . In 2004 he took on the role of Advocate for Children in the Church of England . He took care of pastoral care in inner-city parishes , organized prayer pilgrimages and religious days of reflection.

At the diocesan level , Butler initiated and maintained intensive contacts with partner dioceses in Uganda , Rwanda and Burundi . From 1988 to 1999 and from 2000 to 2001 he was a member of the Council of the Rwanda Mission / Mid Africa Ministry . In 2001 he became a trustee of the Church Mission Society and has been its chairman since 2008. In 2004, he became the Honorarkanoniker ( Honorary Canon ) of Byumba Cathedral appointed in Rwanda.

Membership in the House of Lords

Butler has been an official member of the House of Lords as Spiritual Lord since December 18, 2013 in his capacity as Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham and later as Bishop of Durham .

Private

Butler is married to Rosemary Butler. His wife is a trained nurse and midwife and works as a nurse . He is the father of four children, two sons and two daughters. Butler's leisure activities and hobbies include reading , writing books and going for walks . Butler likes to listen to music , especially by Coldplay , Elbow , Genesis and Eric Clapton ; in the field of classical music , Georg Friedrich Händel , Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven are among his favorite composers . He is an active cricketer and regularly watches various sporting events on television . He also has a profile on Facebook .
