Vernon Nicholls

Vernon Sampson Nicholls (born September 3, 1917 in Truro , † February 2, 1996 in Stratford-upon-Avon ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England from 1974 to 1983 .

Nicholls was from Cornwall . He attended Truro School and studied at Durham University . In preparation for his priesthood, he studied theology at Clifton Theological College in Bristol . In 1941 he was ordained a deacon ; in the same year, he was ordained a priest . His priests career he began as a vicar ( Curate ) in the district Bedminster Down, Bristol and in Liskeard in charge of the church at St Heyne in Cornwall. From 1944 to 1946 he worked as a "Chaplain to the Forces" (army chaplain). From 1946 to 1956 he was pastor ( vicar ) of Meopham , in the county of Kent . He was a member of the Meopham Parish Council and the Strood District Council during this period. He played cricket and took part in performances by the Meopham Players . In later years he returned to Meopham several times. In 1982 he held services there. From 1953 to 1956 he was also Country Dean ( Rural Dean ) of Cobham . From 1956 to 1967 another parish office ( Vicar ) followed in Walsall ; at the same time he was chaplain ( Chaplain ) at Walsall General Hospital. From 1964 to 1967 he was Präbendar ( prebendary of Curborough ) at the Lichfield Cathedral . From 1967 to 1974 he worked as Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of Birmingham ( Archdeacon of Birmingham ). He was ordained bishop on June 11, 1974 in York Minster . He was Sodor and Man in the Church of England from 1974 to 1983 . His enthronement ceremony took place at George's Church in Douglas . In 1983 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of Sodor and Man by Arthur Atwell . In his retirement he worked from 1983 to 1996 as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Coventry ( Honorary Assistant Bishop of Coventry ).

Among the highlights of his tenure as Bishop of Sodor and Man belonged to the collection of the Parish Church of Kirk German in Peel to the Cathedral , the Peel Cathedral . Elevation to cathedral in 1980 by a law of Tynwald . From 1980, Nicholls was also Dean of the newly founded Peel Cathedral. He sold the Bishopscourt estate , the episcopal seat of the Bishops of Sodor and Man, which was part of the Manx Heritage . In Nicholls' view, the high cost of maintaining the property was too great a financial burden for the diocese of Sodor and Man.

Nicholls was very personal in pastoral and social affairs; he had a good memory for faces and names. He also enjoyed a high reputation among the Freemasons of the Isle of Man . In 1977 he became Grand Chaplain of the United Grand Lodge of England . He regularly attended events at the Rotary Club in Douglas.

Nicholls married Phyllis Potter in 1943. The marriage had two children, a son and a daughter.
