The Democratic Current ( French Courant démocrate 'Democratic Current' , Arabic التيار الديمقراطي, DMG at-Tayyār ad-dīmuqrāṭī ; from the Arabic word for electricity (التيار, DMG at-Tayyār ); derived also often called Attayar ) is a Tunisian social democratic party founded in 2013 .

history

The Democratic Current was founded on May 30, 2013. Its first general secretary was Mohamed Abbou , then minister under Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali , responsible for administrative reforms . Mohamed Abbou was Secretary General of the Congress for the Republic, which at the time was a small coalition partner in the government .

The party's manifesto, which was presented for the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2014 , included several social and economic reforms. For the democratic current, six women were at the top of the electoral list in these elections . The party received 1.93 percent of the vote, with three of its candidates entering the People's Representative Assembly .

On March 27, 2016, Ghazi Chaouachi succeeded Mohamed Abbou on the occasion of the first party conference of the Democratic Current to elect the General Secretary.

On October 15, 2017, the social democratic to socially conservative Alliance démocratique merged into the Democratic Current. Subsequently, Mohamed Ben Mabrouk Hamdi became the deputy general secretary of the party, which continued to exist under the name Democratic Current.

At the second party congress on April 21, 2019, Mohamed Abbou took over the party again as general secretary and became its candidate for the presidential election in Tunisia in 2019 . With 3.63 percent of the vote in the first ballot, he clearly missed the runoff election. Compared to the 2014 parliamentary election, however, the result was a positive signal for the parliamentary election in Tunisia in 2019, which will take place a little later . There the party received 6.42 percent of the vote. This made it the fourth strongest party in the country based on percentage points and even the third strongest with 22 seats won.

The party tries to be united and inclusive and stays away from ideological debates. However, their position in favor of the equality of inheritance between men and women has caused the democratic current to lose a large part of its conservative electorate.

organization

The party is headed by a Secretary General and since 2017, when the Alliance démocratique joined the Democratic Current, by a Deputy Secretary General. The latter office has been carried out by Mohamed Ben Mabrouk Hamdi since 2017, while Mohamed Abbou has been Secretary General again since 2019. The base is involved in the party organization through a National Council consisting of 133 people, which has an executive office with eight members and a political office with 21 members.

Representation in the People's Representative Assembly

The Bloc démocrate ( French for Democratic Bloc ), a parliamentary group in which the Congress for the Republic , the Democratic Current, the People's Movement and the Current of Love was involved, has existed in the People's Representative Assembly since 2016 . After the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2019, the faction that still exists will be dominated primarily by the democratic current and the popular movement.
