The people's movement ( French Mouvement du peuple 'movement of the people' ; Arabic حركة الشعب, DMG Harakat aš-Ša'b , often with the second Arabic word in French transcription al-Chaab called for "the people") is a Pan-Arab - nationalist and socialist party in Tunisia , which on March 8, 2011 after the revolution in 2010 was legalized.

history

The popular movement has two predecessor parties, each of which was approved on March 8, 2011 after the revolution. One party was the Nassist Mouvement unioniste progressiste ( French for Progressive Unionist Movement ), which was also close to Muammar al-Gaddafi and was led by Béchir Essid . He was imprisoned during the dictatorship under Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali . The second predecessor was the original popular movement under Khaled Krichi , general secretary of the Association tunisienne des jeunes avocats (Tunisian Association of Young Lawyers) and founder of the Mouvement des unionistes nassériens (movement of the Nasserist Unionists), and Mohamed Brahmi , who also founded the Mouvement des unionistes nassériens was. On March 20, 2011, the two parties decided to merge to form the Mouvement du peuple unioniste progressiste ( French for Progressive Unionist Movement of the People ). Béchir Essid became general secretary of the new party, while Khaled Krichi became the party spokesman. This merger was rejected by many party members and led to several withdrawals, including by Béchir Essid.

In the elections for the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia in 2011 , the Mouvement du peuple unioniste progressiste ran nationwide in all Tunisian and two foreign Tunisian constituencies, received 0.98% of the vote, but no seat in any constituency . However, there were also lists of the popular movement, which received 0.75% of the vote in 26 Tunisian and three foreign Tunisian constituencies. The popular movement won two seats, one each in the constituencies of Bizerte and Sidi Bouzid - including one for Mohamed Brahmi.

The failed Mouvement du peuple unioniste progressiste decided to merge with it under the name of the popular movement. Since then, the popular movement has existed in its current form with Mohamed Brahmi as party chairman and Zouhair Maghzaoui as general secretary. After the popular movement's decision to join the Popular Front for the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2014 , Mohamed Brahmi resigned from the party but was murdered shortly afterwards.

In the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2014, the people's movement stood alone and won 1.34% or three seats, an increase of one seat compared to the 2011 election. The party achieved a big victory in the parliamentary election in Tunisia 2019 with 4.53% of votes and 15 seats won.

Representation in the People's Representative Assembly

Since 2016, the Bloc démocrate ( French for Democratic Bloc ), a parliamentary group in which the Congress for the Republic , the Courant démocrate , the popular movement and the Courant de l'amour were involved, has existed in the People’s Assembly . After the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2019, the faction that still exists will be dominated primarily by the Courant démocrate and the popular movement.
