The Parti destourien libre ( French for Free Destur Party after the former Destur Party , Arabic الحزب الدستوري الحر, DMG al-Ḥizb ad-dustūrī al-ḥurr , abbreviation PDL ) is a Tunisian Bourguibi , secular and nationalist party , which arose in particular from former members of the ruling constitutional democratic ruling party until 2011 , whereby the Parti destourien libre strongly resembled the autocratic Presidency under Habib Bourguiba and Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali , which was overthrown in 2011 .

history

ON May 30, 2013, Hamed Karoui , who was Minister under Habib Bourguiba and Prime Minister under Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, launched an initiative to bring supporters of the historic Destur Party and the resulting Constitutional Democratic Rally together to participate in Tunisian politics not losing any weight after 2011. On September 23, 2013, Hamed Karoui founded the Mouvement destourien ( French for Destur movement ) with Abderrahim Zouari .

In the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2014 , the movement participated unsuccessfully and did not win a seat. On August 16, 2014 Abderrahim Zouari was nominated as a presidential candidate; Before the election, however, the Parti destourien libre called for the election of Beji Caid Essebsi because of the poor parliamentary election result . Abderrahim Zouari came second to last.

Abir Moussi was elected to succeed Hamed Karoui on August 13, 2016 and has been party leader since then. Three days later, on August 16, 2016, the Mouvement destourien was renamed to its current name, Parti destourien libre.

In the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2019 , the party achieved such a good result for the first time that it was enough for entry into the People's Representative Assembly , where it has held 17 of the 217 seats since then. In the presidential election held shortly before in Tunisia in 2019 , Abir Moussi received 4.02 percent of the vote, but did not make it into the runoff election. In 2019, the party made the leap out of political insignificance.

Political positions

The Parti destourien libre is often criticized, speaking in a supportive and nostalgic manner of Tunisia's authoritarian past under Habib Bourguiba and Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. The party positions itself against parliamentarism as well as democracy and advocates a statistic state system, which is run authoritatively with a strictly nationalistic orientation. In the current Tunisian democracy, the party sees a threat to the state, particularly through the strength of Islamist parties. The greatest political opponent of the Parti destourien libre is the Ennahda , a Muslim-democratic and moderate Islamist party and the strongest party in Tunisia. In contrast to the right-wing anti-secular parties Ennahda, Al Karama , Errahma or the Courant de l'amour , the Parti destourien libre has a radically secular orientation, but due to its nationalistic and authoritarian orientation it is also beyond the democratic order of the constitution of the Republic of Tunisia of 2014 described as right-wing extremist , but on a secular and nationalist rather than an Islamist basis.

The party leader Abir Moussi sees the revolution in Tunisia 2010/2011 as a foreign conspiracy. With its rejection of the new parliamentary system, it is well received by many Tunisians, who see the economic crisis in Tunisia after 2011 as a particular cause of this. The poor economic situation was noticeable above all through rapid inflation and growing national debt , which is why the party's populist language eight years after the revolution resulted in a surprising result of 6.63 percent for the Parti destourien libre in the parliamentary elections in Tunisia in 2019. Many Tunisians see their secular way of life threatened by the strengthening of Islamist parties in that election.

Despite its anti-Islamist stance, the Parti destourien libre also has overlaps with Islamist parties, for example because it rejects the legalization of homosexuality . Unlike Islamist parties, however, the reason for her is not religion, but “protection of the Tunisian family”. Thus, the party also contains socially and nationally conservative elements. Due to the elements of ultra-nationalism , social conservatism , populism and hostility to democracy or pluralism , the Parti destourien libre is also compared with right-wing populist parties in Europe that are less religiously oriented.
