Hamed Karoui

Hamed Karoui ( Arabic حامد القروي, DMG Ḥāmid al-Qarawī ; * December 30, 1927 in Sousse ; † March 27, 2020 ibid) was a Tunisian politician and prime minister.

After studying medicine in France with a doctorate, he worked as a pulmonologist in the regional hospital of Sousse. Then he began his political career as mayor of his hometown Sousse, which he also represented as a member of parliament.

From July 8, 1986 to October 2, 1987, he was Minister for Youth and Sport in the cabinet of Rachid Sfar . After the coup d'état by Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali on November 7, 1987, which led to the overthrow of long-time President Habib Bourguiba , he became Minister of Justice.

On September 27, 1989 Karoui was appointed Prime Minister by President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali to succeed Hédi Baccouche . On November 17, 1999, Mohamed Ghannouchi replaced him as Prime Minister. With a ten-year term in office, Karoui was the second longest-serving Prime Minister of the Republic of Tunisia.

Karoui was the first vice-president of the “ Rassemblement Constitutionnel Démocratique ” (RCD), of which he had been a member since 1988.

For many years he was also president of the football club Étoile Sportive du Sahel . Karoui died in March 2020 at the age of 92.
