Mehdi Jomaâ

Mehdi Jomaâ or Jum'a ( Arabic مهدي جمعة Mahdi Dschuma , DMG Mahdī Ǧumʿa ; * March 21, 1962 in Mahdia ) is a Tunisian engineer and non-party politician. From January 2014 to February 2015 he was Prime Minister of Tunisia.

Jomaâ was active in the private sector until March 13, 2013, when he was appointed Minister of Industry under Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali . Most recently, he was director of the aviation division of Hutchinson , a company that belongs to the French group Total . During his tenure as minister he remained unobtrusive. Only his plans to promote fracking in Tunisia met with some resistance.

On December 15, 2013, the National Dialogue between the government and the opposition, which met after the murder of the left MP Mohamed Brahmi , agreed on Mehdi Jomaâ as interim prime minister. For the secular parties Nidaa Tounes , the Republican Party and the Left Popular Front , which boycotted the vote, Jomaâ - although he is politically independent - was seen as a man of the Islamist Ennahda .

On January 9, 2014, the previous Prime Minister Ali Larajedh (Ennahda) announced his resignation; The following day, the interim president Moncef Marzouki Jomaâ charged with forming a new government. As the new constitution of the Republic of Tunisia was subsequently passed in the Tunisian Constituent Assembly on January 26th, Jomaâ was immediately charged with forming a government again; he and his cabinet members were given confidence by the assembly on January 29, 2014, so that his government has been in office since then.

On January 5, 2015, Habib Essid , who was also non-party, was nominated as his successor after the first democratic election to the People's Representative Assembly at the end of October 2014.

At the end of January, the Tunisian media took stock of his government and found that he had implemented his announcements regarding holding free elections and improving the security situation, but had been able to keep almost nothing on economic issues. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier awarded Jomaâ the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on January 24, 2015 .

On February 6, 2015, Jomâa handed over the government to his successor, Habib Essid, after he and his cabinet had been trusted by the People's Representative Assembly the day before.
