Abderrahim Zouari

Abderrahim Zouari ( Arabic عبد الرحيم الزواري, DMG ʿAbd ar-Raḥīm az-Zuwārī ; * April 18, 1944 in Dahmani , Kef Governorate ) is a Tunisian politician of the Socialist Destur Party and the Constitutional Democratic Collection , who was Foreign Minister for a few months in 1997 .

Life

After attending school, Zouari completed a law degree and after graduating worked as a lawyer specializing in civil law. From 1970 to 1975 he was mayor of his native Dahmani and as successor to Ameur Ghedira in 1974 until he was succeeded by Abderrazak Yazid in 1978 as governor of the Gabès governorate , before he succeeded Abbès Mohsen between 1978 and when he was replaced by Mohamed Boulabiar in 1980 as governor of the Nabeul governorate was. He was then from 1980 to 1981 head of the department for regional administration in the Ministry of the Interior. In 1981 he was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the Socialist Destur Party , to which he belonged until 1987. From 1987 to 1988 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Agricultural Production and the Food Industry.

After the Socialist Destur Party was renamed the Constitutional Democratic Collection on February 27, 1988 , Zouari replaced Hédi Baccouche as its general secretary on August 2, 1988 and held this position until February 20, 1991, when Chédli Neffati took over. As the successor to Chédli Neffati, he himself took over the office of Minister of Justice in the cabinet of Prime Minister Hamed Karoui and held this ministerial office until his replacement by Sadok Chaâbane on June 9, 1992. He then succeeded Chédli Neffati between 1992 and his renewed replacement Sadok Chaâbane 1993 Ambassador to Morocco . After his return, he then acted in the Karoui cabinet as the successor to Mohamed Saâd from June 15, 1993 until his replacement by Mohamed Raouf Najar on January 22, 1997, first as Minister for Youth and Sports and then as the successor to Habib Ben Yahia between the 22nd January 1997 and his replacement by Saïd Ben Mustapha in December 1997 briefly as Foreign Minister . He later took over from Ridha Ferchiou as Minister of Education in the Karoui cabinet on February 15, 1999 , which he held until he was replaced by Ahmed Iyadh Ouederni on November 17, 1999.

After leaving the cabinet, Zouari replaced Abdelaziz Ben Dhia as general secretary of the Constitutional Democratic Collection on November 18, 1999 , and remained in this position until December 5, 2000, when Ali Chaouch succeeded him. Shortly afterwards, on January 23, 2001, he was appointed to succeed Mohamed Raouf Najjar as Minister for Youth, Children and Sport in Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi's cabinet . After another cabinet reshuffle, he became Minister of Tourism and Crafts on January 14, 2004 and then Minister of Transport from November 10, 2004 to January 14, 2011.

In the first round of the presidential election on November 23, 2014 , Zouari applied for the Destour movement for the office of President of the Republic of Tunisia . With 2,701 votes (0.08 percent) of the vote, however, he only reached the penultimate place among the 27 candidates.
