United Democratic Alliance (Zambia)

The United Democratic Alliance was an (electoral) coalition in Zambia made up of the United Party for National Development , United National Independence Party and Forum for Democracy and Development , which was founded in spring 2006.

They agreed on a common presidential candidate based on the insight and experience of the 2001 elections with eleven presidential candidates that the current simple majority voting system in Zambia favors the incumbent the more the more candidates stand for election. The common candidate was Hakainde Hichilema , UPND, a young businessman who replaced the undisputed but late Anderson Mazoka as chairman of the UPND and, after some discussions with Edith Nawaki of the FDD, also chairman and presidential candidate of the UDA. The attempt to get the populist Michael Sata from the Patriotic Front on board failed.
