Anderson Mazoka

Anderson Kambela Mazoka (born March 22, 1943 , † May 24, 2006 in South Africa ) was a Zambian politician and presidential candidate.

Mazoka graduated from Union College with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1969.

After completing his studies, Mazoka was appointed General Manager of Zambia Railways by former President Kenneth Kaunda, among others . Later he was President of the Zambian Anglo-American Corporation (South Africa).

The leader of Zambia's largest opposition party, the United Party for National Development (UPND), ran for his party's presidency in the 2001 elections in Zambia and was second behind the current President Levy Mwanawasa with 27.2 percent of the vote . Mwanawasa gained a lead of 35,000 votes, with international election observers finding serious deficiencies in the preparation, implementation and counting of the elections. For the 2006 election in Zambia, he organized the United Democratic Alliance , which he chaired and for which he should run for the presidency.

Hakainde Hichilema succeeded Mazoka, who died of kidney failure on May 24, 2006, as chairman of the UPND .
