Andreas Gestrich

Andreas Gestrich (born July 3, 1952 in Ravensburg ) is a German historian .

Gestrich studied history, Latin and Russian at the Free University of Berlin and at the Universities of Tübingen and Bristol from 1973 to 1979 . In 1979 he finished his studies with the 1st state examination for teaching at grammar schools in the subjects of history and Latin. Instead of going to school, Gestrich became a research assistant in a DFG project on the social history of childhood, youth and family at the Institute for Educational Science at the University of Tübingen. In 1983 the doctorate followed. phil. in history at the University of Tübingen. In the same year he moved to the University of Stuttgart , where he also completed his habilitation in 1992 .

From 1992 to 1997 he held substitute professorships in Würzburg , Karlsruhe and Trier . Since 1997, Gestrich was Professor of Modern History at the University of Trier. In September 2006 he took over the management of the German Historical Institute in London . In February 2006, Gestrich was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

His main research interests include a. historical peace research, media history, the social history of religion, historical migration research, British history and the history of poverty (see Collaborative Research Center 600 “Strangeness and Poverty” ).
