Collaborative Research Center 600 "Strangeness and Poverty"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 600Strangeness and Poverty . Change of Inclusion and Exclusion Forms from Antiquity to the Present ”was a special research area at the University of Trier . The research network was set up for ten years (2002 to 2012) and examined from an interdisciplinary perspective how different societies encounter strangers and the poor. In addition to the subject of history , German studies , art history , media studies , political science , legal history ,Sociology , Ethnology and Catholic Theology .

history

The research association, which belonged to the Research Center Europe (FZE), started its work on January 1, 2002. Until the end of 2004, the spokesman for the SFB 600 was Andreas Gestrich . The inspection for the second funding phase, in which the spokesperson was passed on to Lutz Raphael , took place in October 2004. The third funding period (2009–2012) was approved by the DFG in November 2008 and funded with 9.2 million euros. Herbert Uerlings took over the role of speaker in 2009 . With a poverty exhibition and a didactic DVD production for school lessons, the SFB carried out two large public projects. Another novelty in the third phase was the IT service project "Research Network and Database System (FuD)", which maps the entire research process and thus simplified collaboration in the project group. FuD is one of the first software solutions of its kind in the humanities . The SFB 600 had an integrated graduate school to support and promote younger scientists .

Research program

The research interest was based on the question of what forms of dealing with strangers and the poor were developed in societies of different types from antiquity to the present. The analysis of the change in forms of inclusion and exclusion was intended to create the basis for a social and cultural-historical description of European and Mediterranean societies, which particularly focuses on the problems associated with the organization of social solidarity and its limitations. The broad temporal and spatial horizon should reveal similarities and differences as well as breaks and continuities. At the center of the theoretical perspective was the concept of inclusion / exclusion : It describes those social processes that mark the limits of belonging and participation . The investigations into the ambivalent forms of “including exclusion” or “excluding inclusion” are particularly advanced. An attempt was made to operationalize the originally sociological concept of inclusion / exclusion as a theory of cultural studies. To this end, systems theory , but also deviance and inequality theoretic approaches were used and discussed in terms of a cultural-scientific synthesis.

Project areas

The research network was divided into four project areas:

Project area A: Strangeness

In the joint work of the project area, fundamental patterns of inclusion and exclusion were researched from a long-term perspective, which have shaped the definition, evaluation and specifically the status of foreignness since ancient times.

Project area B: Poverty and poor relief

In the field of historical and sociological research on poverty, the SFB 600 asked about the continuity and change in the Christian-Jewish pattern of interpretation of poverty since late antiquity, about practices and organizational forms of poor relief and poor policy, as well as religious, philosophical and political speeches about poverty.

Project area C: Collective representations and the historical semantics of poverty and foreignness

This project area dealt with representations or semantics , which generated or accompanied the inclusion or exclusion of strangers and the poor. The main question was what role traditional images, texts and ideas play in the dynamics of social relationships, what functions different media take on and to what extent the inclusion / exclusion of poor and strangers are inscribed in the sign systems of these media. In addition, questions were asked about the political dimension of media visibility and institutional representation of the interests of strangers and the poor.

Knowledge transfer to the public

The SFB 600 presented selected research results to the general public. In addition to radio broadcasts and articles in print media, this was done using formats such as the 'Geistesblitze' campaign (2007), the cultural summer of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate ('Straße der Wissenschaft', 2005), productions with the Laterna Magica , contributions to the children's university , events for teacher training and participation in regional science fairs such as the 'Night of Science' in Trier. In the third funding period (2009–2012), two major projects were implemented: an exhibition on the subject of “Poverty - Perspectives in Art and Society” and the production of a didactic DVD for school lessons on the subject of “ Egypt in antiquity. One population - many cultures ”.

exhibition

From April 10 to July 31, 2011, the Simeonstift city museum and the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier presented the special exhibition “Poverty - Perspectives in Art and Society” designed by the SFB 600. The exhibition was based on 250 exhibits, including a. by Jörg Immendorff , Käthe Kollwitz , Picasso and Rembrandt , how art dealt with the topic and how it was and is itself part of the debates about membership and the exclusion of the weak. The exhibition thus offered an overview of 2500 years of poverty history in Europe, albeit not chronologically, but across it from different perspectives: documentary, appellative, idealizing, stigmatizing and reformist / revolutionary. The exhibition was shown in a reduced form from September to November 2011 in the Museum of Bread Culture in Ulm . At the opening in Trier , u. a. the President of the DFG, Matthias Kleiner , at the opening in Ulm the patron, Federal Education Minister Annette Schavan . The exhibition in Trier counted around 60,000 visitors. For schools, the SFB 600 designed a didactic thematic booklet with accompanying material for teachers in the subjects of history, social studies, German, religion, ethics and art. The exhibition was echoed in the regional and national features (e.g. Trierischer Volksfreund, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Zeit) as well as on radio and television (e.g. Deutschlandfunk, WDR 3, SWR2, SR). Reports were also made in the neighboring countries of France, Luxembourg and Belgium. The accompanying volume "Armut - Perspektiven in Kunst und Gesellschaft" (Primus, Trier 2011), edited by Herbert Uerlings, Nina Trauth and Lukas Clemens , had sold around 1,600 times by the end of the exhibition. The Süddeutsche Zeitung spoke of a “milestone in poverty research”, while WerkstattGeschichte praised the “well-founded, comprehensive and differentiated presentation of the subject of poverty”.

Didactic DVD

As part of the sub-project Ö 2 “Hellenes and Romans, Jews and Egyptians in the multicultural society of Egypt in antiquity”, a didactic DVD was created for the in cooperation with the Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education (FWU) and the Multimedia Kontor Hamburg School lessons produced. The 23 film clips and three picture galleries provide insights into the history and society of Egypt through the ages through original recordings, graphs and expert interviews.

IT infrastructure for the humanities

To network the research materials and results, the SFB 600 developed the internet-based “Research Network and Database System (FuD)” as part of the INF IT service project in conjunction with the competence center for electronic cataloging and publication processes in the humanities . The integrated work, publication and information platform is used by various projects at academies, universities and research institutes and can claim to be a model for the historical sciences.

Publication of results

Key findings of the research are in the publishing house Peter Lang assisted series "inclusion / exclusion. Studies on Strangeness and Poverty from Antiquity to the Present ”. In addition, numerous other publications appear in other publishers. A complete research bibliography can be found on the publication platform of the SFB 600.
