Mau ( Hindi : मऊ , Urdu : مئو; Maū [ mʌu ]; also Maunath Bhanjan ) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with around 280,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
The city is located on the banks of the Tamsa (Tons) River in eastern Uttar Pradesh, around 90 kilometers northeast of Varanasi . The city is the administrative seat of the district of Mau . The majority of the city's population is of Muslim faith.
The national highway NH 29 runs through Mau from Ghazipur via Gorakhpur to the Nepalese border. Furthermore, the railway line from Varanasi to Gorakhpur meets the line from Shahganj and Azamgarh at Mau station .
