The Agra district ( Hindi आगरा ज़िला , Urdu آگرہ ضلع) is located in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .
The district is located in the north Indian plain south-southeast of the federal capital New Delhi . It extends over an area of 4041 km². The capital is Agra . The rivers Chambal and Yamuna form the district boundary in the southeast and northeast.
The population in the 2011 census was 4,418,797. In 2001 there were 3,620,436. The gender ratio was 868 women per 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 71.58% (80.62% among men, 61.18% among women). 88.77% of the population are followers of Hinduism , while 9.31% are Muslim .
