The Maharajganj district ( Hindi : महाराजगंज जिला ; also Mahrajganj ) is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . The administrative center is the eponymous city of Maharajganj .
geography
The Maharajganj district is located in northeast Uttar Pradesh on the border with Nepal and belongs to the Gorakhpur division . Neighboring districts are Kushinagar in the east, Gorakhpur in the south and Siddharthnagar in the west. In the north lies the state border with Nepal. At the place Sunauli there is a border crossing to Nepal.
The district area has an area of 2952 km² and belongs to the flat Ganges plain . In the northeast, the Maharajganj district is touched by the Gandak , a tributary of the Ganges . While most of the Ganges plain is used intensively for agriculture, forest areas have been preserved near the Nepalese border. Overall, over a tenth of the district area is forested.
The Maharajganj district is divided into the four Tehsils Sadar, Nautanwa, Nichlaul and Pherada.
history
Maharajganj has existed as an independent district since 1989. Before that, the area was part of the Gorakhpur district.
population
According to the 2011 census, Maharajganj district has a population of 2,684,703. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 23 percent. The population density of 909 inhabitants per km² is slightly above the Uttar Pradesh average (829 inhabitants per km²). The Maharajganj district is very rural: only five percent of the population lives in cities. The urbanization rate is one of the lowest in the state. The literacy rate is also below average: only 63 percent of the district's residents can read and write (the Uttar Pradesh average is 68 percent).
According to the 2001 census , Hindus make up the majority of the residents of the district with 83 percent. There is also a Muslim minority of 17 percent.
