Chhatarpur ( Hindi : छतरपुर ) is a city with approx. 180,000 inhabitants in the historic Bundelkhand region in the north of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . Chhatarpur was the capital of the former princely state of the same name and is now the administrative seat of the district of the same name .

Chhatarpur is located in the wooded northern foothills of the Vindhya Mountains at an altitude of approx. 305 m above sea level. d. M. The megacity of Bhopal is about 330 km (driving distance) in a southwesterly direction; the city of Prayagraj is about 300 km northeast. The climate is warm to hot; Rain (approx. 1200 mm / year) falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon season .

The population of Chhatarpur consists mainly of Hindus (approx. 80%), Muslims (approx. 17.5%) and Jains (approx. 1.5%); Sikhs , Christians and Buddhists are small minorities. As is customary in censuses in India, the male population clearly exceeds the female population. Mostly Hindi and Bundeli are spoken .
economy
Agriculture in the area forms the livelihood and economic basis of the urban population. Traders, craftsmen and service providers of all kinds have settled in the city itself. Industry has only rudimentarily developed so far.
history
In the region - despite their nominal affiliation to the Maurya and Gupta empires - different tribal groups dominated for centuries. From the 10th to the 12th century it was part of the Chandella Empire . After the Islamic conquest of northern India , it was ruled by the Sultanate of Delhi and the Mughal Empire . In the late 17th century, the warrior prince Chhatrasal (1649–1731) broke away from the Mughal empire and founded his own state structure, from which u. a. the princely states of Panna and Chhatarpur emerged . The city of Chhatarpur only developed during this period and, like all of India, came under the military, economic and administrative control of the British in the 19th century .

Attractions
The comparatively young city has no historically or culturally significant sights. The historic site of Dhubela and the Maharaja Chhatrasal Museum are only 16 km to the northwest; of the World Heritage Site belonging Monuments at Khajuraho is located about 44 km south-east.
