Georg Reutter the Elder

Georg Reutter , called the Elder (baptized November 4, 1656 in Vienna ; † August 29, 1738 ibid), was an organist and composer in Vienna.

Life

Georg Reutter was probably a student of Johann Caspar von Kerll , whom he succeeded in 1686 as organist at St. Stephen's Cathedral . In 1697 he was employed as a theorbist in the Vienna court orchestra . From 1700 he was court and chamber organist. In 1712 Reutter followed Johann Joseph Fux as the second and from 1715 he became the first Kapellmeister at St. Stephen's Cathedral. His son Georg Reutter the Younger became his successor and an important composer.

Numerous church music works, such as masses and pieces in various formations, have been preserved by Georg Reutter the Elder. He also wrote a number of works for organ and other keyboard instruments.
