Ferdinando Maria Pignatelli CRTh (born June 9, 1770 in Naples , † May 10, 1853 in Palermo ) was an Italian Roman Catholic clergyman, Archbishop of Palermo and cardinal .

Life

Born as the son of the Prince of Monteroduni Giovanni Pignatelli and his wife Lucrezia Mormile, he came from an old Neapolitan noble family . He was related to Pope Innocent XII. as well as with the cardinals Francesco Pignatelli CRTh, Francesco Maria Pignatelli and Domenico Pignatelli di Belmonte CRTh.

Ferdinando Maria Pignatelli became a regular canon of the Theatines, studied theology in Genoa and was ordained a priest on May 25, 1793 . He then taught philosophy and theology at various religious houses, first in Genoa, where he gave lectures on the interpretation of the Holy Scriptures , and later in Naples. During the French occupation he maintained the life of his religious community with difficulty and after the return of the Bourbons gathered his scattered confreres around him. On May 20, 1824, he was elected Superior General for the three-year period from 1824 to 1827 . During this time he worked to bring together the scattered members of the community and to regain religious houses that had been confiscated during the Napoleonic period. With a brief from Pope Gregory XVI. from February 5, 1836 he was appointed again for three years (1836-1839) to the superior general.

On April 3, 1838, Ferdinando Maria Pignatelli entered the service of the Curia as consultor of the Congregation Propaganda Fide . King Ferdinand II of Sicily made him Archbishop of Palermo on February 3, 1839. He died after 14 years in the episcopate and was buried in the Cathedral of Palermo .
