Ignazio Giovanni Cadolini (born November 4, 1794 in Cremona , † April 11, 1850 in Ferrara ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman, archbishop and cardinal .

Life

Cadolini began his legal studies in Bologna , where he was met by the Apostolic Delegate Giacomo Giustiniani , who took him to Rome in 1815 as secretary. At the Sapienza he completed his studies with the Laurea on January 9, 1817 and followed Giustiniani , who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Madrid , to Spain. There he assumed the function of an auditor of the nunciature and was ordained a priest on May 31, 1818 .

Appointed Bishop of Cervia in 1826 , Cadolini stayed in Madrid until May 17, 1827, when Giustiniani's successor arrived. After arriving in Italy, Cadolini took over the leadership of his diocese. From 1831 to 1832 he was Bishop of Foligno , but kept the administration of Cervia. In 1832 he replaced Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti , who later became Pope Pius IX, as Archbishop of Spoleto , and he continued to administer Foligno until September 30, 1834. In 1838 he was appointed secretary of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide and received the title of titular archbishop of Edessa in Osrhoëne .

Pope Gregory XVI elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of January 27, 1843, on January 30, 1843 Cadolino was appointed archbishop of Ferrara and accepted as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Susanna in the college of cardinals . At the conclave in 1846 that Pope Pius IX. chose, Cadolini did not participate.
