Luigi Vannicelli Casoni (born April 16, 1801 in Amelia , Umbria , † April 21, 1877 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop of Ferrara .

Life

He was the elder of the two sons of Count Giovanni Vannicelli and Countess Maria Casoni. His mother's family had two cardinals before him, Lorenzo Casoni and Filippo Casoni . Luigi Vannicelli Casoni received his first education at the seminary in Terni and then went to Rome to study philosophy and theology. He accompanied Cardinal Francesco Serlupi to the conclave of 1823 as a conclavist . In 1824 he entered the service of the Curia and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1829 . Afterwards he was relator of the Congregation for the Administration of Goods and trainee lawyer at the courts of lawApostolic signature . In 1834 he met as a consultor to the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars . On February 8, 1838 he became Apostolic Protonotary . After various positions as legate , he was Governor of Rome, Pro- Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church and Director General of the Police from September 13, 1838 , a position he held until his elevation to the rank of cardinal.

Pope Gregory XVI elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of December 23, 1839 in pectore , this was made public on January 24, 1842. Luigi Vannicelli Casoni received the red hat and the titular church of San Callisto on January 27, 1842. He was a participant in the 1846 conclave from which Pius IX. emerged as Pope. On October 4, 1847 he opted for the titular church Santa Prassede . Together with the cardinals Gabrielle della Genga Sermattei and Lodovico Altieri , he formed the triumvirate that ruled Rome from July 1, 1849 to April 1850.

On May 20, 1850 Luigi Vannicelli Casoni was by Pius IX. appointed Archbishop of Ferrara. The episcopal ordination took place on May 26th of the same year in the Sistine Chapel by the Pope himself; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Domenico Lucciardi , Secretary of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars, and Bishop Giuseppe Maria Castellani OESA , Papal Sacristan . Luigi Vannicelli Casoni attended the First Vatican Council from 1869 to 1870 . From November 8th, 1870 until his death he was Pro- Datar of His Holiness.

He died of a fever with difficulty breathing and was buried in the Roman church of Santi Vincenzo ed Anastasia alle Tre Fontane .
