Filippo Cardinal Casoni (around 1805)

Filippo Casoni (born March 6, 1733 in Sarzana , † October 9, 1811 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and cardinal secretary of state .

Life

Filippo Casoni was the older of two children of Count Leonardo Casoni and his wife Maddalena nee. Promontorio. He was a great-great-nephew of Cardinal Lorenzo Casoni and great-uncle of Luigi Vannicelli Casoni , who became a cardinal in 1839.

Casoni studied law at La Sapienza University in Rome and obtained a doctorate in 1767. He was already Pope Clement XIII's chamberlain from 1758 . and Speaker of the Apostolic Signature . From 1767 to 1770 he was governor of Narni , then until 1785 governor of Recanati .

After nine years as a legate in France, he was on February 21, 1794 by Pope Pius VI. appointed titular archbishop of Perge and received minor orders three months later . Only then was Cardinal Hyacinthe Sigismond Gerdil able to donate him episcopal ordination on May 4, 1794 ; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Ottavio Boni and Bishop Michele Di Pietro . Casoni was Apostolic Nuncio in Spain until 1801 .

In the consistory of February 23, 1801 Casoni was elevated to cardinal by Pius VII and received the titular church of Santa Maria degli Angeli as cardinal priest . The Pope appointed him cardinal secretary of state in 1806 . As such, he played a rather insignificant role, since the Pope largely took over the policy against Napoleon Bonaparte himself. In addition to his old age and poor health, this was probably the reason why Casoni resigned from his office in February 1808. From 1807 to 1808 he was also treasurer of the Holy College of Cardinals .

Filippo Casoni died on October 9, 1811 at the age of 78. He was buried in Santa Maria in Campitelli in Rome.
