Tommaso Cardinal Riario Sforza (born January 8, 1782 in Naples , † March 14, 1857 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Studying at the Collegio Nazareno in Rome since 1793 , he began his service at the Papal Curia on April 19, 1804 as a trainee lawyer for the Apostolic Signature . Since 1806 apostolic protonotary , he was before September 13th 1806 relator of the prefecture for the administration of goods, this he remained until 1808. Since December 8th 1814 a member of the congregation for the Tridentine Council , he became an apostolic delegate on March 9th, 1816 in Macerata and on July 22, 1816 Maestro di camara .

Pope Pius VII created Riario Sforza cardinal on March 10, 1823 and appointed him cardinal deacon of San Giorgio in Velabro on May 16, 1823 . After he was ordained a priest on September 28, 1823 , he became cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Domnica on November 17, 1823 . On March 12, 1825 under Leo XII. Appointed a member of the first State Congregation, he became President of the Subsidies Commission on March 15, 1826, Prefect of Economics of the Propaganda Congregation on October 1, 1826, and from 1828 to 1830 treasurer of the Holy Cardinals College .

Since April 17, 1829 Apostolic Legate of the Province of Forli, he did not return to this post after the conclave of 1830, but stayed in Rome. On December 5, 1834, he was appointed Apostolic Legate of Urbino and Pesaro, and on December 19, 1834, he moved as a cardinal deacon to the titular deaconry Santa Maria in Via Lata . The retention of his second title diakonia was granted to him until 1837.

Since 1842 he was cardinal protodeacon on January 24, 1843 under Pope Gregory XVI. Prefect of the Congregation for Good Government and Cardinal Chamberlain of the Roman Church on April 3, 1843 . As such, after the death of Gregory XVI. the interim administration of the Papal States in the time of the Sedis vacancy in 1846. The new Summus Pontifex Pius IX. , whose election Cardinal Riario Sforza announced on June 16, 1846 as proto-deacon, appointed him on December 27, 1847 Minister of Economy, Agriculture, Industrialization and Beaux-Arts . On February 12, 1848, however, he resigned his ministry and was also appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Public Affairs. The cardinal resigned from this office on February 28, 1848.

Cardinal Riario Sforza participated in an election of the Pope four times : in 1823, 1829, 1830/31 and 1846.

When Tommaso Riario Sforza died in Rome on March 14, 1857, he was the last cardinal created by Pope Pius VII. He was buried in the Basilica of Santi XII Apostoli .
