Carlo Oppizzoni
Carlo Oppizzoni (born April 15, 1769 in Milan , † April 13, 1855 in Bologna ) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop of Bologna . His term of office of 52 years and 7 months is the longest in the history of the Archdiocese of Bologna.
Life
priest
Oppizzoni was born in Milan as the son of Count Francesco Oppizzoni and his wife Paola Oppizzoni (née Trivulzio). As a young man he studied theology and canon law in Pavia . He was ordained a priest on May 25, 1793 . Six years later Carlo Oppizzoni became archpriest of the cathedral chapter of Milan.
Archbishop and Cardinal
On September 20, 1802, the 33-year-old Oppizzoni was appointed Archbishop of Bologna. The next day, Cardinal Giovanni Filippo Gallarati Scotti donated his episcopal ordination in Rome . Pope Pius VII elevated him to the cardinal priest of San Bernardo alle Terme in the consistory of March 26, 1804 . For his refusal to attend the wedding of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and the Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria on April 2, 1810, property and cardinal dignity were withdrawn from him and twelve other cardinals by the Emperor of France. The twelve cardinals, among them Cesare Brancadoro , Alessandro Mattei and Pietro Francesco Galleffi , had to wear black clothes, which is why they were called black cardinals . Only in July 1815 was the Archbishop of Bologna able to return to his episcopal city.
Oppizzoni took part in the conclave of 1823 , from which Leo XII. emerged as Pope, and became Arch Chancellor of the Pontifical University of Bologna the following year . He also took part in the conclaves of 1829 and 1830-1831 . In 1839 he received the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina and became the longest serving cardinal priest , cardinal proto-priest , which he remained until his death. As such he later took part in the conclave that Pius IX. chose. During the revolutions of the pontificate of Gregory XVI. (1831–1846) broke out, and during the uprisings of 1848 the cardinal supported the people of Bologna. He intervened to prevent irreparable consequences.
death
Carlo Oppizzoni died in 1855, two days before his 86th birthday. When he died he had been cardinal for 51 years, bishop for 52 years, and priest for nearly 62 years. He is one of the most important personalities of the modern Archdiocese of Bologna.
Others
Carlo Oppizzoni ordained Francesco Battaglini , later also Archbishop of Bologna and cardinal, as a priest in 1845 .
