Luigi Ciacchi
Luigi Ciacchi (* 16th August 1788 in Pesaro , Papal States ; † 17th December 1865 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal .
Life
Ciacchi's family belonged to the landed gentry in Pesaro. His father Gianbernardino Ciacchi was a gonfaloniere . He himself was initially a member of the Italian viceroy's bodyguard. He then studied in his hometown and in February 1822 became the valet of Pope Pius VII. From the successor Leo XII. Ciacchi was appointed house prelate in 1825. Shortly before his death, the Pope appointed him pro-legate in Bologna . On January 24, 1834, Ciacchi became governor of Rome and vice chamberlain of the Church.
Pope Gregory XVI appointed him on February 12, 1838 cardinal deacon with the titular deacon Sant'Angelo in Pescheria . It is not known when he received the spiritual ordinations . He gave up his governorship. Cardinal Ciacchi advocated less traditionalism at the Curia and was therefore highly valued, especially in his hometown of Pesaro. For Pius IX. , in whose election in 1846 he had participated, he made decisions for a reform program. In March 1847 he appointed him legate in Ferrara . Ciacchi protested vigorously against the Austrian occupation and tried the liberal policy of Pius IX (in the first years of office). to implement. However, he was unable to appease the situation and gave up the post in July 1848. In May of the same year he was Cardinal Secretary of State for four days . After his time in Ferrara, Ciacchi withdrew more to Pesaro. He visited Pius IX. 1857 when he was in Urbino . Cardinal Ciacchi died in Rome in 1865 and was buried in San Angelo in Pescheria, as was his will.
