Life

Antonio Maria Cadolini, who came from a noble family, first studied in Recanati and deepened his theological knowledge in the seminary of Ancona. In 1792 he joined the Order of Barnabites in San Severino , who sent him to Turin in 1793 . There he was ordained a priest in 1794 . He stayed in Turin until 1798 as a teacher of rhetoric , in the same position he worked in Macerata from 1800 to 1804 and became known as a preacher. He was called to Rome as an annalist of the order and between 1805 and 1821 he was a preacher in the most important cities of Italy. During the abolition of the order between 1810 and 1814 he lived temporarily in his hometown. After the re-admission of the order he returned to Rome and in 1816 became one of the assistants of the general of the order , after which he worked for various curial congregations.

On April 19, 1822 he was appointed Bishop of Cesena by Pope Pius VII . He was ordained bishop on April 21, 1822 by his predecessor in the episcopate, Cardinal Francesco Saverio Castiglioni, who later became Pope Pius VIII ; Co- consecrators were Francesco Bertazzoli , Secretary of the Study Congregation , and Archbishop Louis Piatti . Despite his pastoral zeal, the conservative, restorative and full of rigorous moral standards, Cadolini did not get along well with the political mood in the population.

In February 1838 Antonio Maria Cadolini was appointed Bishop of Ancona and Numana . On June 19, 1843, Pope Gregory XVI took him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente in the college of cardinals . Cadolini was a participant in the conclave of 1846 that Pope Pius IX. chose. In 1849 he had to participate in the surrender of the city besieged by the Austrians in order to limit the damage to the civilian population. In October 1850 he refused to attend the reception of Field Marshal Radetzky in the occupied city, which earned him sympathy among the citizens.

He died in Ancona and was buried in the local cathedral .
